No one under 35 will understand the joke.

[-] [email protected] 32 points 3 days ago

I'm under 35! First machine was a win98 XPS T450. 450Mhz!!!

[-] [email protected] 22 points 3 days ago

I'm under 35 and I was playing Prince of Persia on DOS first (in 93-94). Being born in a second world country has its... benefits(?)

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

I understood most 80s cartoon references since we got them a decade late.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

Guys? We found the exception!

[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Well then, as someone under 35 - can someone please explain?

[-] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago

The window displayed in the screen is the configuration dialog for the "Flying Through Space" screensaver in Windows 95: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RcLJJ5GOXg

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Gets really good towards the end!

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Thank you :)

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

When he's right he's right, I'm 34 and I don't understand this reference at all.

[-] [email protected] 19 points 3 days ago

"What happened we dropped out of warp, report!"

"Sir, something moved the mouse"

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

"Commander, why is the main viewscreen only getting 21 FPS?"

"Sorry captain, I had the starfield set too high while we have a Chrome tab open."

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

It seems like we are trapped inside some kind of endless labyrinth!

[-] [email protected] 22 points 3 days ago

This is amazing!

If you're feeling nostalgic, grab the Win95 screensaver here, and plop it in C:\Windows\System32

https://archive.org/details/ssstars_201812

Works on Win 10 and 11. Still jitters exactly as expected heh.

Linux users have clones available

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

Aren't screensavers executables? That's some security nightmare if it still work on Win11.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

It's not like this particular screensaver can load data, so it cannot be made to do bad things with malformed data or something. The security nightmare is only about finding a trusted copy of the original 32 bit SCR file. (Not the 16 bit one, which also exists.)

Windows asks for admin approval before copying it into system32. So you probably can't do this in a corporate environment.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Can't wait til we see the Enterprise's main view screen full of flying toasters.

[-] [email protected] 18 points 3 days ago

I hate to be THAT guy, but…. That’s not the helm. That is Ops!

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Damn it, but thank you for being that guy, lol

I even questioned myself before submitting that title, did a quick google, and figured either that was the helm or both stations up front are collectively referred to as the helm.

The results that misled me...

...now I have to stealthily edit the title.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah, there are various episodes that establish that different functions can be transferred to different bridge stations over the course of TNG.

I think when Data is piloting the ship from his old seat in PIC S3, that is what is happening, in universe.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

Well, this certainly explains Starfleet's legendary opsec.

[-] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago

I used to stare at that screensaver for so long as a teenager. And I wasn't stoned.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

Slow to fast, but what about Ramming Speed™?

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

At least there aren't any flying toasters.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Wrong franchise ;-)

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

And then the panel goes full BSoD while the view screen claims it needs to update drivers

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

This is literally how it works in Bridge Crew lol

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Warp the fuck out LMFAO!!!

This is one of the best!

Data would totally use a bash shell.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 3 days ago

Interestingly, bash shell was released 2 years after TNG came out.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

But many years before it's set. Checkmate!

Actually, that is a fun fact. I have no idea if I'll ever use it but I feel happier knowing it.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

fish, because he's not basic.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

zsh because he could actually figure out how to configure it.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Just FYI: saying "bash shell" is like saying "ATM machine"

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

What do you have against automated ATM machines?

[-] [email protected] -2 points 3 days ago

?

Either this is a joke and I don't get it or you don't know what ATM means

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

It’s funny because it illustrates someone pedantic enough to point that out would also not get the joke.

Technically you are correct. It is like saying the Bourne again shell shell.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

My attention was not to be pedantic, but informative. I hoped the "Just FYI" would carry that connotation instead of a pedantic one...

+ I'm literally autistic 💀

[-] [email protected] -3 points 3 days ago

Im literally disabled.
That has nothing to do with anything.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It has with in terms of sometimes being able to understand some jokes and effectively communicate what I mean on my part at least

[-] [email protected] -2 points 3 days ago

Take responsibility for yourself.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

lmaoo, what a troll. Blowing up a simple "Just FYI" so much

and ofc they're from Piefed :p

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

You don't even understand simple jokes.
