I have been more than 2 years on Lemmy and I have had an amazing experience with everything, but lately I see more and more US politics on all! I also see new communities regarding US politics + newspapers about the US, cross-posting same article in multiple communities and so on.

It's only me who thinks this is too much? Anyone else that have noticed it?

I live in Los Angeles county. Right now it's kinda all I can think about.... But I understand our political crisis can totally harsh your vibes or whatever.

I tend to block every community with American news and it’s what I spend 90% of my time doing on here.

Hey, did you know your account is set to appear as a bot and many may be filtering out your posts/comments as a result? You can change this in your Lemmy profile settings.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Ooo, thank you for telling me this. Can I ask in what way? I’ve just made some changes but feedback would be useful for me as a new user. Thank you!

Using a blacklist approach seems to be very popular, but here's an alternative for those who want to try something different.

Subscribe to all the communities you consider worth your time. Change the setting of your default feed so that home=subscribed. When you're just casually browsing, you'll see posts from the communities you've explicitly approved, so you can be pretty sure that you won't be seeing stuff you don't want to be exposed to.

If you want to discover new and interesting places, there are actually a few communities specifically for that purpose. ([email protected] and [email protected]) Just subscribe to those, and your home feed will introduce you to new things from time to time. If you want to see shitposts, politics, memes or a combination of all three, you can always visit the "all" feed.

Sorry to ask but I have changed my settings to show ‘top in the last hour’ but this never translates when I close and open Lemmy again, it’s just back to All Active. Is there a step that I am missing? Thank you for your help kind stranger

Username (top right corner), settings, scroll down... Keep on going... There! Sort type: top hour.

If you're using a mobile client, it's also somewhere in the settings. Probably buried deep.

The only solution that I'm about to do!

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I've blocked so many communities that my all feed is finally starting to clear up recently

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

How long did this take you? Also do you find that you have to repeatedly block the same communities? There is certain communities that shows up every day and gets blocked every day, and the next day they’re back

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

How long did this take you?

It took me a whhhhile my best advice, is to make All/new your home feed, and block Aggressively ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, you don't want to see, even if it's not politics. Block block block block. I make it a habit to check lemmy every morning and block every single community i do not want that's shown up in the current day. I keep blocking until I hit posts from the previous day where I've already gone through and did my blocking. Do that every day, be consistent, and you'll see it start to clear up.

Also do you find that you have to repeatedly block the same communities?

YES My god it's annoying too. The thing is, I think the ppl who make those communities, make a bunch of them on several instances bc they know no one wants to see it and they aren't getting engagement. It's their way of shoving it down your throat.

There is certain communities that shows up every day and gets blocked every day, and the next day they’re back

My theory on this, is it's because the same users are deliberately creating more of them on other instances. Just keep blocking and don't stop.

Now, for me, I only get maybe 5 to 7 communities each day I don't want to see and I block them, and it clears up my feed.

The more people vocally speak up against Nazis--the easiest stance in the world to take--the sooner it goes away.

Talking sense online does help. It doesn't forcibly stop them instantly, but it absolutely helps, so everybody do it. No point is too obvious. "It's good when governments help their citizens and bad when they attack them."

"Everybody who assaults their fellow countrymen because some limp traitor told them to is a bitch."

[-] [email protected] 0 points 3 days ago

The thing is... Who are you convincing in the fediverse?

I don't think I have ever seen a nazi here, probably not even a right winger.

I think between Elon Musk departing Washington and the alarming fascist escalation in Los Angeles, it's kind of to be expected.

But note that (at least on my instance, lemmy.world) you can click the post's drop-down menu and hide posts you don't want to see again, so that helps somewhat.

I guess my question is "Since when?"

Yes there was an annoying influx of election politics last year. Then there was another since January, Trump getting into power and saying dumb (but apparently newsworthy) shit almost every single day without fail.

a bunch of the stuff the Trump admin did

Following that there is the Project2025 high-veolcity dismantlement of democratic establishments and norms, while simultaneously destroying the relationships with allies through trade negotiations.

This week, of course before an unusual military display that is usually planned by North Korean and Russian dictators, Trump is setting up the suspension of freedom of expression by improperly summoning the National Guard and Marines to what was originally a disproportionately small anti-ICE protest.

So yes, a lot more crazy stuff is happening than before, and it certainly isn't healthy. However, I don't consider it the fault of people posting/cross-posting on Lemmy, I blame the chaos-stirring narcissistic arsonist who leads what formerly was the leader of the free world.

Yes, you should filter it to a level that you can tolerate in a good mental state. Each person is different. Don't let yourself be overwhelmed, but be aware enough to hold onto the thread of knowing what you can or cannot do about it.

I’ve started blocking communities more frequently as a result. I just need a curated summary of the most impactful actions at an international scale every couple weeks, not a daily feed of rage bait created by morons.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Yeah there’s been an influx lately of it it is getting a little annoying. A lot of times it seems to be a single user that will post the same thing across so many things so I’ll just block them. I block the users that are just news organizations as well

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Lately?

It's all the fucking time, and it's fucking tiresome.

And I'm American.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago

all

Well, that's to be expected.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

changed my all to new, didn't help much, then to scaled.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

I suggest adding a filter that removes anything with trump, musk, etc. in the title.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I started blocking once and for all. By thanks for your recommendation.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Please accept our apologies, our country is trying to die though. It's kind of all we can think about.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Piefed has a content filter to remove it. Signing up for piefed.social, one of the first questions it asks is "How tired are you of the Trump/Musk spam?". I just checked my filters, and the only 2 words are "trump" and "musk", and I have not seen a single lick of US politics in any of my browsing over the last week or so since joining. (EDIT: Lemmy doesn't have content filters, I was looking at the wrong info, sorry!)

I get my news elsewhere and I'm part of local political action groups. One of the reasons I left Reddit a couple weeks back was to get away from the constant dooming. Even after meticulously curating my communities, it was hard to get away from. There's a time and place for worrying about news and politics, but anywhere and everywhere 24/7 isn't it.

I can see how it could be a problem if you WANT to see a little bit of it, though.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

After a quick search, Lemmy does appear to have similar content filters available, but I don't know exactly where to find them.

Lemmy does not have built-in keywords filters. Another area where Piefed is better.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

You're right, I stand corrected. I was looking at a post on Lemmy.World that was a changelog that mentioned adding keyword content filters.

Turns out that it was a changelog for a particular mobile Lemmy client (Summit).

My quick glance wasn't quite deep enough, it seems.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

No worries!

This is what I sometimes feel as someone who isn't from the USA, a bit alienated from the discourse online. Our politics is more boring so it can be hard to understand the cultural wars unless you are a huge USA-phile who follows the world news extremely closely.

Edit: Like right-wing people here mainly have a reputation for being wankers as opposed to "nazis" or anything else dangerous. Makes it hard to understand the apocalyptic rhetoric sometimes but we'd probably behave the same if we thought our democracy was in danger.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

After reading through this thread, I want to mention that I'm feeling the same way as you and with the amount of politics and uncomfortable discussions I'm seeing, I find that I prefer to go find discussions that are more relaxing instead. This also kind of also reminds me of the ideas of a community which I'm not able to think of what to call it, or I would probably have created it already. Someone did give me an explanation in DM that I think fits it, but still not sure what to call it.

I have been finding myself uncomfortable with a lot of things posted in politics, News, Global News, and some in Not The Onion, Memes. I'm also finding myself not wanting to look inside the technology community because I'm not interested in the latest and the greatest shit since it feels like we are heading for a disaster. Right now, I'm just thinking of ideas on what can be done to make it better, block a lot of the negative stuff out, and focus on getting back into a more peaceful wilderness-like area.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago

I understand the cross-posting issue, it's something that comes with a federated discussion format and I don't think anyone has come up with a great way to solve it without such a distributed effort. It's ironic that before when there were so few instances (before and during the first Reddit migration) there was a concern that without cross-posting a lot there wouldn't be enough growth and some communities might die out if they happened to be on a single failing instance. I'd rather have too much activity than none at all, at least you can filter or block the worse ones.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

See my post about the same thing

I think the same people make the same communities across instances to shove it down everyone's throats tbh

[-] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

I usually stick to the Subscribed feed, and then the Piefed personal feeds.

It's mostly places like [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

I rarely browse All, as I rely on [email protected] to discover new communities.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Same, but I visit all 2-3 times per day for other stuff.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I treat this place just like real life. The feed is not tailored to me, so I block lots of stuff. Rude people, people that down vote, narcissists, communities with bad vibes, if I interact with moderators after interacting in good faith, or if I post something I know to be factually correct but get some negative cascade in response I simply block the whole community or individual. I've blocked 200+ users and at least as many communities. I only care about real people that have the decency to interact cordially.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

More like, you only care about yes-men

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago
