Its so long ago that I don't remember. I remember being very confused already. Finally finding an instance and then not getting back a confirmation email.
I was used to instant signups for accounts. Here nothing happened for a couple of days and I just gave up.

As someone who runs a dedicated email server for a Mastodon instance, this is a major pain in the ass. Some email services will shitcan any messages coming from your server just because it is hosted on an IP address in the same block as some spammer from years ago, regardless of how many authentication protocols you configure (basically any public cloud hosting service will suffer this problem). I think most admins would actually appreciate if you reach out to them about things like this. I've activated a couple accounts manually when their email provider would not allow them to accept-list my mail server.
Now that I'm on Lemmy and understand it its fine.
But as a newbie it was a massive barrier to entry. I don't wanna put in effort to signup.
And this isn't about me but about newcomers in general. Theres a lot of confusion about choosing instances and understanding the terminology etc. Adding so many barriers to entry makes it tough.
Firstly I wish instances were called servers. Once I thought of instances as servers was when I understood the concept.
I say all this as someone mostly tech illiterate. I'm really bad at this stuff like the general population beyond the average Lemmy user.
No disagreement here. The user experience IS bad. All I'm saying is the cards are stacked against us. The internet is designed first and foremost for multinational corporations. Our existence is tolerated within the cracks... for now.

I’ve always wondered - how much time do you few superposters spend on this platform? Do you spend time with any other social media?
When I was regularly posting this was it. I quit all social media in 2019. Went back to reddit in 2022 and deleted it the same year.
Came to Lemmy in 2023. This was the only place I posted ever. I never used to post on other platforms when I was on them.
I rejoined social media recently die to war and info was being shared there (and insta fornmt sister, genuinely improved our relationship)
Now I'm probably gonna delete all accounts in a dew months. Just wanna stay while the summer transfer window goes on (football thing)
When I post a lot I can spend two hours a day. Just replying to people takes the most time.
If I might ask, why delete your accounts instead of simply not posting anymore? Wouldn’t deleting remove all of your posts and comments (which would probably be noticeable to a lot of people who would have “detached” comments in their histories - probably a sizable percentage for a platform the size of lemmy’s)
Never deleted Lemmy accounts. Only deleted twitter, reddit, Facebook etc.

What is an AmA?
AmA’s or “Ask Me Anything” began on the old internet, originally AOL chatrooms, later followed by Slashdot. They are crowdsourced interviews where the interviewee first makes a post describing who they are and what they do. Commenters then leave questions and can vote on other questions according to which they would like to see answered.
The interviewee can then go through and reply to the questions they find interesting, and easily see those questions the internet is dying to have the answer too. Questions will be a mixture of radical, serious and lighthearted resulting in the kind of interview you won’t get elsewhere.
What Topics Are Allowed?
Anyone can do an Ask Me Anything. The topic of the AmA must meet the rules below, and in some cases you must provide proof of the claims you are making. Ask Me Anything topics fall into two categories:
Something that plays a central role in your life. The prime example of this is a person's job; posts about someone's occupation are almost always allowed. A person's topic should be something that they know thoroughly and is important to them; this gives them more to discuss and a more thorough background in the field.
A truly interesting and unique event. An example would be "I organised a protest against x." It's an activity that doesn't play a central role in someone's life but is so uncommon that many users would not have experiences of their own to relate to it.
AmAs should NOT be about:
Mutual-Aid and Crowd Funding - AmA submitters that include any aid or funding campaign must be eligible for an AmA without the campaign for it to be allowed. Additionally, the focus of the AmA must not be the campaign -- those posts would be more appropriate in the mutual-aid community. Posts about suicide.
Other Restrictions:
Giveaways are not permitted on AmA. Contests and giveaways already running on a third party site prior to the AmA are acceptable
Proof
Proof in the case of public figures or orgs may be a social media post on an official account. For other topics it may be a proof image. This does not always have to be included in the post at the time of posting and it may be discussed with the moderators and provided privately. We will ALWAYS respect your complete privacy.
