1/1000 = 0.001 (which is 0.1%, because 1% = 0.01; like 1¢ out of $1.00).

An easy [yet embarrassing] mistake to make, even for a “math major”.

Let this serve as a warning to you would-be mouthpieces: reread your statements before you go putting your foot in your mouth.

Also the idea that is takes and math major to convert a fraction to a percentage...

Exactly. You don't need to be a mathematician, you just need to think rationally.

The fraction of people who mess this up is too high. The common denominator between them is they confuse 100% and 100

You and your damn math puns

Was Biden simultaneously vice president for his own presidency?

[–] [email protected] 35 points 6 days ago

no but the box article is from 2020

[–] [email protected] 33 points 6 days ago (2 children)

He was a former vice president at the time, still is, though being a president is more notable.

I think we should refer to him as "Former Community Pool Security Guard Joe Biden" from now on. (Yup, early 60's).

There's a Mitch Hedberg joke in there.

The date on the article appears to be 9/29/2020, so Biden was not elected president yet. But even if the article came Out on 11/29/2020, Biden still wouldn’t be president; he’d be President-elect. A presidents term does not actually start (or end) until Jan 20 of the following year, after the president is sworn in. To add more dates to the confusion, the Jan 6 date was when congress was meant to certify (make official) the votes from the November election; yup, despite what CNN and all of the other news organizations say on Election Day, the votes aren’t actually certified until much later.

Welcome to America, land of the confusing!

About 1 in every 265 Americans has died of covid. Covid continues to account for about 1% of all deaths in the US.

That was my thought, so right off it sounds incorrect.

Name shouldn't be censored so employers that checks this person's social media will see it and reject the application. You don't want this person to be in a role where math is required (and be confident that he's right over his subordinates' correction)...

Took me a moment but it says "election 2020" so that's why the number is so low. Oh, and also it was before Biden's presidency and he was vice president under Obama

Trust me, I'm a math major in calc 1, I'm basically Ramanujan.

Most people can't comprehend a difference between 0.1% and 0.0000000000000001%. It's all just "a very small percentage."
