That’s my Governor!!! MN isn’t always so nice! Ope, secret is out!
What's the MN version of "bless your heart"?
Depends on group dynamics but the one I have heard all my life is… “oh that’s interesting” the most passive aggressive response ever but still holds true!
Uh, well. Depends on the people you're with. I am a Southern interpreter (or Minnesotan/Canadian interpreter if im south of Missouri)
"Bless your heart" to most Minnesotans is confusing. It's light hearted enough to not be a strong emotional expression of sympathy, but it's far too strong in terms of the condescending effect it has.
A more appropriate way to express the same sentiment with the same effect would be: "Well, as far as things go, you have it pretty fair."
But a Minnesotan would say to a Minnesotan: "That's a bit different."
A slightly too long "Hmmmmm, so it is then" is also acceptable.
Still my favorite MN colloquialism is Slaps hands down on thighs and stands up "Whelp Ok then." And then without pretense or hubub, leaving the place immediately.
Almost as good as the Irish goodbye which is a massive favorite if mine.
I think that Minnesotans are the only Midwestern people that found a way to circumvent the standard Midwestern 2 hour "goodbye, and I will see you soon."
Hoosiers haven't found a way to circumvent that bullshit, AFAICT.
That's one of the many reasons, though cold weather and snow was absolutely the chief reason, that I now live in San Diego, California.
Slaps hands down on thighs and stands up "Whelp Ok then." And then without pretense or hubub, leaving the place immediately.
that just the preface to the prequel to the forward of the first chapter of the first book of 'good bye'.
Well ya know, that can be the case. Close family or social gathering? Yeah, it's a tiered process inching towards the door and taking 20 minutes to put on a jacket standing in the entryway/mudroom.
Your co-workers dinner party and it's round 8pm and nobody's brought out the pie and coffee? "Whelp. I'll be seeing ya"
Haha silly Walz. Every MAGA knows that all (south) Africans are black.
As a former teacher, I can honestly say most gens I have dealt with legitimately believe this fact. It’s the ultimate face palm moment! It’s more prevalent in the MAGATS due to no/lack of education, critical thinking skills, and the worst believing everything they read on FB or FauxNews… It’s honestly embarrassing, I had to quit teaching because I couldn’t take it anymore!
But honestly, thankful to live in MN where I have a Governor who doesn’t give two shits about “What should be said vs what NEEDS to be said”. Plus Canada is RIGHT THERE…. Haha!
i doubt they even knew south africa was a country until Musk came in the picture.
Thankfully my generation had Charlize Theron. It definitely made me google why white people came from Africa. As a Canadian I didn't learn a lot about the details of Africa... Or more, likely, I didn't understand them all
I seem to recall a US reporter covering the Olympics (?) in the UK a while back and interviewing a black athlete where they kept saying "African American" and the athlete was like "I'm British."
To be fair they live in a really big bubble. Once heard an American call our media racist due to a lack of African American representation. Our bad for not bringing in all those African slaves I guess. I guess you have to be really, really racist before you can qualify as not racist to an American. Being mildly racist, having a colonial past, even indigenous genocide just isn't virtuous enough for them.
You have to parade your victims around and pretend they aren't second class citizens and oppressed by law enforcement and tell everyone you are a land of freedom and opportunity. Forget the indigenous people, slavery, Jim Crow, the war on drugs. Mission accomplished.
When you have a whole culture that is fucked in the head and doesn't know it you can't expect great political debate. Did you know Ted Cruz is a latino Canadian. HAHA. How clever. We owned the MAGAs by resorting to infantile name calling. Meh. If they can't do better than this then the world's liberal democracies are honestly better off without them.
Imagine unironically pretending the British Empire had no part in creating those victims or the institution of colonial slavery.
You should read more Kipling, so you can see the soul of Britain call Indians dirty n-words in between talking about the white man's burden.
Or the first true English novel, Robinson Crusoe, which spends half of it arguing how superior and profitable British chattel slavery is to Spanish genocide.
Fun Fact: a recent academic trend has made certain scholars note that within The Tempest, Prospero actually has more on common with the natives of the Americas than British colonizers, as opposed to previous thought/fact linking Caliban to the Caribs. It's actually pretty interesting reading, and a good reminder that the British slave trade system lasted so long that Shakespeare might have inserted political commentary about it into his plays.
Allthough the trans Atlantic slave trade was alive at the time the British invaded Australia we were primarily a prison colony which provided sufficient cheap labour. The abolishionists had more or less won by the time land owners were looking for African slaves and they found alternatives such as indentured Pacific islanders or indigenous people.
The colonial era was very shitty. Fuck the Belgians in particular. Also the Dutch, French, Spanish, and not least the English. The Japanese empire is not fondly remembered either. Nor Russia who never stopped.
The US was always a bit odd in the modern era. There were WWII riots in England, New Zealand and Australia which started with how badly the US treated African American soldiers which is something considering the history of all our countries. The US has a mixed reputation so it is always interesting when they preach to us.
It's also entertaining when they reject any well intentioned criticism of their society even while it is collapsing. Good luck with that.
Said the hypocrite squatting on his own continent sized aboriginal burial ground with an ongoing genocide that only started ramping down in 1970 and getting upset about "well intentioned criticism."
Aussie? I seem to remember something about Stolen Generations.
You aren't telling me anything I don't already know. My point is the US loves blaming outsiders but is fucked at real introspection. And predictably I get whataboutism responses.
Walz seemed like a clever VP pick but this isn't a clever quote. The maga party allowed Musk in and will scapegoat him when it suits them and the real systemic problems will remain. It is frustrating that global security and the world's economies are under threat and we aren't seeing any credible alternative leadership in the US getting traction. I don't disagree with Walz's statement at all but if it came from a 10 year old instead of a professional politician it might have more impact.
some people still confuse african americans with AFRICANS(from africa specificaly and not born in the us.
It's not slander if it's true

How is this news? It's just factual
News should be factual. It's the opinion pieces being treated as articles that got us into this mess in the first place.
Read the AP wire about a story, then see how CNBC covers the story and compare it to Fox's coverage. You'll find that more often than not you have to look at both stories to get the full picture.
I just use an RSS reader to get most my news. The only long form stuff I read now are exceedingly specific substacks (soon to switch to Ghost) and anything Pro Publica put out.
100% agree with you! News should be factual otherwise you end up in some fictional based conspiracy theory situations, like ‘Pizzagate” and “Alien Reptilians” …. etc…
But that RSS reader is probably clutch in our internet world now! It’s ridiculous what “news” people believe due to being gaslit for years!!
Not really my point. I agree with you. I was saying his statement is a non-statment as it's just basic truth. It's not particularly news worthy
What the heck, do you want some ‘Esquire UK’ news rag? Telling you what’s up? Or what? Because those stories are NOT fact but rather speculation/flat out false. But I do love me some fiction on people, it’s honestly hilarious, not going to lie!
Clearly, you think news with ‘facts’, in your opinion, “isn’t news” … um WHAT? I legit am confused.
I mean, I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I sure as hell hope journalists and news outlets are putting out factual information… but instead we have people who believe stories on Facebot, Newsmaximal Wrong, Faux News, TikNot, and X marked dead … true journalism died during Drumpf’s first election from hell, so facts always please!
If you do not think this is “news”, ‘governor calling out a douche who paid his way up Drumpf’s illegal immigrant ass (as well) to basically gut out government for his own gain, who has never done ANYTHING but buy already established companies and ultimately try to gain from it (Starlink, Tesla, SpaceX)’.
WHAT IS?
