Step 1) make cities more convenient to walk around in.

Step 2) limit traffic in clean air zones to try and lower the incidence of asthma and other respiratory illnesses.

Step 3) ???

Step 4) literal 1984.

literal 1984

middle class counter-revolutionary PMC are being OPPRESSED by the cruel and monstrous Stalinist authoritarian state!

I genuinely think most folks that unironically invoke 1984 have never read it.

It's a book full of the whinings of a pretentious classist.

There's one part that really stood out to me, where Orwell's stand in character complains that the socialists make everyone use ballpoint pens and that literature has died now that fountain pens are unavailable.

I'll admit no, I haven't read it, but....what is his point there? I cannot understand.

Anyone who ever read the damn thing would've figured out it's really not that great of a book and then never invoke it again. Shout out to my man Huxley for painting a dystopia that actually makes sense on a societal level instead of being randomly ruled by the evil people for evil things evilly

car cities are already like this. you just avoid the cops. they're already the bad guys and they hate it when people are "loitering" aka relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. which is why any smart person hangs out in tunnels and under bridges.

please legalize loitering and having parks. i would like to see the sun shine again.

First time hearing about these "15 minute cities". Can anyone give me a rundown, please?

Those who live in gated communities requiring ID to enter, leave, and contracts and millions to live are the same people who want you to believe this kind of bullshit.

I used to live somewhere where I could do all my shopping and get to work in a 15 minute walk from my apartment and nothing would make me happier than having a similar living situation again (basically impossible to imagine in alaska lol). Do chuds genuinely enjoy sitting in cars for 1/4 of their day? At one point I was driving 100 miles a day for my commute and it was one of the most soul-crushing things I've ever experienced.

Just because you are a fascist doesn't mean everyone else is one.

Stuff like this is like all the drag queen hysteria Republicans ran on and ate shit on. It's not good in an absolute sense, and it definitely makes it harder to move the ball forward, but ordinary people hear it and go jesse-wtf

[-] [email protected] 15 points 2 years ago

People screeching about this are the same people who support gated communities.

tankies will hold you captive in the vegetable section of your local grocery store if you make walkable cities happen

Here in the Philippines, literally everywhere has become a 15-minute-city because of sari-sari stores. I think other countries should copy that concept. Or maybe they already have something similar?

[-] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I googled sari-sari store. In US we have stuff like this in big cities (bodegas, corner markets etc).

But even in fairly densely populated suburbs (like my town has +2,000 people per square kilometer), people need to walk about 30 minutes to get to a store that sells produce. However, you could walk about 10 minutes and get to a gas station that sells alright sandwiches and cigarettes.
