Image is of many Hamas soldiers supervising the handing over of Israeli hostages to cars heading out of the Gaza Strip.

After 15 months of genocide - and resistance to it - the Israeli regime realized that they could not win a military victory against Hamas, and were forced to sign a humiliating ceasefire in order to get their hostages returned.

With much of Syria under the control of Al-Qaeda, and an increasing level of covert infiltration into Lebanon, the crisis in the Middle East is not over, and we may still be in its beginning stages, as the center of hegemony continues its gradual shift away from the United States. Their navy, once considered the best in the world, is likely also not very happy about their ships and aircraft carriers being forced to retreat by Yemen, one of the poorest countries; and all eyes are on Iran, who has, over the last year and a half, demonstrated a newfound confidence and strength to directly strike Israel.

The recovery for Gaza will take, at a minimum, decades; it could indeed never fully recovery to even how it was before, considering it is not in Israel's interests to see their concentration camps recover. But Hamas has proven to be steadfast and the tunnel network has proven its resilience, despite facing some of the most powerful conventional bombing in history. This shows that Palestine's liberation is a when, not an if; and hopefully a much sooner "when" than expected before October 7th.

Trump just said that 700 000 Ukrainians have been killed during the war, along with "almost a million" Russians.

Finally we get a realistic number on Ukrainian casualties, and it's from Trump talking casually with news reporters in the Oval Office while signing executive orders! Also says that Zelensky wants to "make a deal".

Trump is talking so candidly with reporters, it's quite weird to watch. Also he thinks tarrifs are the answer to everything. There's a problem? Just solve it with tarrifs on your opponent!

He just signed an executive order to withdraw from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will talk with Brazilian President Lula da Silva about a joint Latin American response to the expansionist policies of Donald Trump, who is threatening to seize the Panama Canal and is trying to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Asked about a joint statement in the face of Trump's expansionist threats and new migration policy, Sheinbaum said there was “unity” in Latin America.

“I've had several phone calls in recent days, I've spoken to [Guatemalan President Bernardo] Arévalo, there was a meeting of the foreign ministers of different Latin American and Caribbean countries and in recent days we're going to speak to President Lula,” Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference.

Google rushed to sell AI tools to Israel’s military after Hamas attack

The article is paywalled so text is in the spoiler. But jfc this is evil. I take this to mean that talk of the IDF using AI tools to determine “if we bomb this building we may kill 40 civilians but there a 75% chance of also killing a Resistance fighter”… probably was Google’s stuff specifically.

spoilerSAN FRANCISCO — Google employees have worked to provide Israel’s military with access to the company’s latest artificial intelligence technology from the early weeks of the Israel-Gaza war, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.

The internal documents show Google directly assisting Israel’s Defense Ministry and the Israel Defense Forces, despite the company’s efforts to publicly distance itself from the country’s national security apparatus after employee protests against a cloud computing contract with Israel’s government.

Google fired more than 50 employees last year after they protested the contract, known as Nimbus, over fears it could see Google technology aid military and intelligence programs that have harmed Palestinians. In the weeks after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel by Hamas militants, a Google employee in its cloud division escalated requests for increased access to the company’s AI technology from Israel’s Defense Ministry, the documents obtained by The Post show. The documents, which detail projects inside Google’s cloud division, indicate that the Israeli ministry urgently wanted to expand its use of a Google service called Vertex, which clients can use to apply AI algorithms to their own data. A Google employee warned in one document that if the company didn’t quickly provide more access, the military would turn instead to Google’s cloud rival Amazon, which also works with Israel’s government under the Nimbus contract.

Another document, from mid-November 2023, showed the employee thanking a co-worker for helping handle the Defense Ministry request. The documents do not indicate exactly how the Defense Ministry planned to use Google’s AI technology or how it might have contributed to military operations.

Other documents dated from the spring and summer of 2024 show Google employees requesting additional access to AI technology for the IDF.

As recently as November 2024, by which time a year of Israeli airstrikes had turned much of Gaza to rubble, documents show Israel’s military was still tapping Google for its latest AI technology. Late that month, an employee requested access to the company’s Gemini AI technology for the IDF, which wanted to develop its own AI assistant to process documents and audio, according to the documents.

Spokespeople for the IDF, Google and Amazon all declined to comment for this article. Google has previously said that the Nimbus contract with Israel’s government is “not directed at highly sensitive, classified, or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services.”

The documents obtained by The Post do not indicate how Israel’s military used Google’s AI capabilities, which can be used for tasks such as automating administrative functions far from the front lines.

Gaby Portnoy, director general of the Israeli government’s National Cyber Directorate, suggested at a conference early last year that the Nimbus contract directly aided combat applications, according to an article from People and Computers, the Israeli media outlet that hosted the conference.

“Thanks to the Nimbus public cloud, phenomenal things are happening during the fighting, these things play a significant part in the victory — I will not elaborate,” he said. Israel’s military has for years been expanding its AI capabilities to speed up processing of surveillance imagery and selection of potential military targets.

After the IDF began its assault on Gaza after the Oct. 7 attacks, it turned to an AI tool called Habsora developed internally to provide commanders with thousands of human and infrastructure targets to bomb, contributing to the violence in Gaza, according to a previous investigation by The Post.

Habsora is built on top of hundreds of algorithms that analyze data such as intercepted communications and satellite imagery to generate coordinates of potential military targets such as rockets or tunnels. But some Israeli commanders have raised concerns about the technology’s accuracy, The Post reported. Others worried that too much trust was being placed in the technology’s recommendations, eroding the quality of Israeli intelligence analysis.

It is unclear whether the Habsora project or its development involved the use of commercial cloud computing services.

A senior IDF official told The Post in an interview last summer that the military had invested heavily in new cloud technologies, hardware and other back-end computing systems, often in partnership with U.S. companies. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive national security topics.

The IDF also tested technology from multiple companies as it explored potential applications for generative AI, the technology behind the recent flourishing of chatbots and other AI tools, the official said. The uses included scanning audio, video and text from IDF systems as part of an audit of the military’s operations leading into the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

Google has been a major contractor to Israel’s government since 2021, when it, along with Amazon, was selected by Israeli officials for the multibillion-dollar Nimbus cloud computing contract aimed at making sweeping upgrades to Israeli government technology. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Post. The deal saw the rival companies build data centers in Israel and agree to provide cloud software and storage to government departments. At the time, Israeli officials told local media that the deal would include working with the Israeli military.

Nimbus has faced protests from some Google and Amazon employees, who say their companies shouldn’t do business with Israel’s government because of its treatment of Palestinians.

The loudest protests have come from Google workers who are concerned that the contract might allow its AI technology to be enlisted by Israeli military and intelligence agencies that they believe regularly violate human rights in Gaza and the West Bank.

When Google acquired the British AI start-up DeepMind in 2014, the terms of the acquisition stipulated that DeepMind technology would never be used for military or surveillance purposes, lab founder Demis Hassabis said in a 2015 interview. Today, Hassabis is one of the company’s most powerful executives and leads all its AI development work under the brand Google DeepMind, a portfolio that includes image, video and voice technologies and its generative AI assistant Gemini.

Google has AI policies that pledge the company will not apply the technology to uses that harm people. Its human rights program says the company reviews its products and policies for compliance with international standards like the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights and invites employees to raise any concerns they have about the company’s work.

Last summer, a group of more than 100 employees emailed Google managers and members of the company’s human rights team asking them to review the company’s work with the Israeli military, according to a Google employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their job. The requests were ignored, the employee said.

I get the feeling that "the resistance" will consist mostly of rich and famous people calling Trump and Elon poopy heads.

Green Day delivered a pointed message to billionaire Elon Musk while on stage in his home country of South Africa.

When performing their biggest hit “American Idiot,” the band’s singer Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics from “I’m not a part of the redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda.”

Stunning and brave.

Politico: State Department issues immediate, widespread pause on foreign aid

It appears to go further than President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, which instructed the department to pause foreign aid grants for 90 days pending review by the secretary. It had not been clear from the president’s order if it would affect already appropriated funds or Ukraine aid.

Still, the document leaves room for interpretation and does provide some exceptions. It specifies that foreign military financing for Egypt and Israel will continue and allows emergency food assistance and “legitimate expenses incurred prior to the date of this” guidance “under existing awards.” At points, it also says the decisions need to be “consistent with the terms of the relevant award.”

One current State Department official, plus two former Biden administration officials, said the pause appears to stop aid to key allies such as Ukraine, Jordan and Taiwan. These officials were granted anonymity to discuss sensitive internal government documents.

Stopping aid to Ukraine and Taiwan is pretty huge, even if temporary. Would be nice if Israel was included, but that would be silly to expect.

PA security forces have clashed with local Palestinian militias in the West Bank, seen as the common enemy of both the PA and Israel. Cooperation between the PA security forces and the IDF is reflected by the fact that the former have simply remained in their barracks during IDF raids and have actively interfered with militants' defenses against those raids.

During the Israel–Hamas war, the rate of clashes has increased. The July 2024 West Bank unrest directed against the Palestinian Authority was a major escalation in the conflict, sparked by the alleged arrest attempt of "Abu Shujaa", the leader of the Tulkarm Brigade, on 26 July. The PA also launched notable operations into Tubas in October 2024 and into Jenin in December 2024.

Internet videos surfaced showing PA forces beating and torturing Palestinians who expressed opposition to the Jenin operation on social media. In one case detainees were filmed being forced to chant in praise of President Abbas. The crackdown spread to areas outside of Jenin as well, with one Palestinian activist in Artas near Bethlehem reporting that security forces had raided his home and insulted his family in response to his criticism of the operation. Brigadier General Anwar Rajab said that the incidents were under investigation.

Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, and the Popular Resistance Committees all condemned the Palestinian Authority's operation, including the killing of Jaayseh. Hamas official Abdul-Rahman Shadeed said that the PA must "strengthen the national cause" instead of suppressing anti-Israel militancy.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was reported to have "expressed satisfaction" with the course of the Jenin operation, and the Israeli security cabinet directed the IDF to bolster collaboration with the PA security forces on the recommendation of the Central Command.

"Jenin is now a microcosmos of the whole West Bank. If the PA sputters there, its control in the entire region is in danger. All told, the units have legitimization to act at the moment, despite the criticism of the Abu Mazen [Abbas] government. If they're successful in Jenin, it's likely that they will try to extend their activity to additional refugee camps in the north part of the West Bank. If they fail, or if we kick them out of there, that could signal the beginning of the end of their rule." - An Israeli security source told Haaretz:

However, following discussions among Israeli security officials, IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi decided to recommend on 29 December that the Israeli government not approve transfers of weapons to the PA forces, as had been requested by the United States

Mahmoud Abbas doesn't even hide the fact that he's just a puppet of the US and Israel. Fuck this guy and his party. At least the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, which still seem to have some ties to Fatah and the PLO, are still attacking Israel and helping the resistance.

China Donates Power Generation Equipment to Cuba - Telesur English

Article

Both nations have formalized projects to deepen cooperation in renewable energy. On Monday, a second batch of parts and accessories for power generator equipment donated by China arrived in Cuba.

Through a message on the X platform, the Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, confirmed the donation, which aims to help address the energy deficit on the Caribbean island. Cuban Ambassador to China, Alberto Blanco, expressed gratitude to the Communist Party, the government, and the Chinese people for sending these parts and accessories.

The equipment will support distributed generation across the national territory and improve living conditions for Cubans, who have been affected by scheduled blackouts. Cuba and China have signed agreements in areas related to political dialogue, the promotion of the Belt and Road Initiative, energy, transportation, food security, digitalization, industry, and trade.

Recently, the two nations also formalized an investment project in renewable energy, under which seven photovoltaic parks, each with a capacity of five megawatts, will be installed in six of Cuba’s 15 provinces. The arrival of components for assembling the parks is expected to begin within seven months, according to Cuban sources.

Hey, news nerds, take a break from all the crazy stuff happening and hear about a little scandal from the world of Go.

A big international tournament, the LG Cup, just finished. The finals consisted of three games between Korean player Byun Sang-il and the famous Chinese player Ke Jie, who is #3 in the world, and has held the #1 spot before.

A rule was introduced about two weeks before the tournament to penalize players for placing a captured stone on the table instead of a bowl, where they can be more easily seen by the opponent, and which matters for keeping track of the score. In the Chinese ruleset, you don't keep track of captures, so Chinese players aren't used to being attentive to them. Korean players have complained about Chinese players "hiding" their stones, causing them to miscount the game, which is why the rule was made.

In game 2 of the finals, Ke Jie set a stone on the table, and his opponent called a ref, and he was penalized two points, which is substantial in pro game. However, Ke Jie made up the difference and was winning, until... he left another stone on the table. His opponent called a ref while he was up getting a drink of water, and this time the penalty was forfeiting the game.

Look at this nerd:

Ke Jie had won the first match, and he was ahead in the second, but his opponent won the third (actually, Ke Jie lost game 3 by the same rule, but he was far behind and may have done it intentionally). This little technicality decided the entire tournament. Rules are rules, but it's a very bullshit way to win, and it's very unsportsmanlike to put the trophy and prize money above the integrity of the game. People are pissed.

The good news is, you probably don't care about go, so you don't have to worry about this! You may now return to your regularly scheduled hellworld.

An American company wants to build a luxury bunker in Virginia by 2026 for 625 of the world's richest people in the event of a global catastrophe, the Daily Mail reports. The entrance fee is $20 million, the project price is $300 million. The shelter will provide medical care based on artificial intelligence, the ability to retire and "do business", and, if necessary, close yourself in a special capsule for additional security. There will be luxury restaurants, an indoor pool, cold bath centers, IV therapy rooms, a bowling alley and a climbing wall.

The bunker is located near the White House, but project leaders insist that this is a coincidence and has nothing to do with current global tensions.

probably just another techbro/rich people scam

An update on the United States migrant deportation flights situation: After México blocked US military transport planes deporting immigrants from using their airspace (a story first broken by us on hexbear, believe it or not, we actually managed to get something right and beat the mainstream media), Colombia decided to do the same. This led to the rather embarrassing scenario of the two C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft having to turn around mid flight.

The United States and Trump have decided to respond, and are not taking this lightly. Trump has now implemented, effective immediately (according to himself):

  • 25% tariffs on all goods coming into the U.S. from Colombia, that will rise to 50% after one week.

  • A travel ban and visa revocation of all Colombian government officals.

  • Visa sanctions on all party members of the Colombian Government, and their 'allies'.

  • State treasury, banking and financial sanctions.

  • Enhanced border inspections of Colombian citizens and cargo.

So it has begun... He's actually going to do it, not that I expected him not to, deportation of illegal immigrants has popular support inside the USA (which only grew as Trump got closer to taking office) and Trump will definitely make very public displays of power and force here.

My takeaway: this is a warning shot towards México; they either let the US deportation flights use their airspace and maybe even land in México itself, or México will face the same sanctions as Colombia.

Trump heaps tariffs on Colombia after it refuses migration deportation flights, Reuters, 26 January 2025

Cutting off oil is Canada's nuclear option. What would it mean if it happens?

An excellent analysis of how Canada can fight back against Trump’s threat of annexation.

Remember, not all crude are the same. American refineries are mostly geared toward the Canadian and Venezuelan heavy crude that they have to import. The domestic shale production are mostly light sweet crude that they don’t have the capacity to refine, and have to export.

Donald Trump says he wants nuclear talks with China, Russia

“Tremendous amounts of money are being spent on nuclear, and the destructive capability is something that we don’t even want to talk about,” Trump told World Economic Forum attendees in Davos during a video address, while also stressing the war in Ukraine needed to end soon.

The president said he had pushed for nuclear arms cuts in his first term. “So we want to see if we can denuclearize, and I think that’s very possible. And I can tell you that President Putin wanted to do it. He and I wanted to do it. We had a good conversation with China, they would have been involved, and that would have been an unbelievable thing for the planet.”

The big wet boy really wants his Nobel Peace Prize, huh?
