I'm lowkey awed that an organization claiming the name still exists.

Whenever there’s a name given to a broad but unorganized and highly subjective left wing movement, any formal organization that claims to be the official org of the movement will inevitably turn out to be a grift.

The Black Lives Matter org included in their list of demands that Trump be banned from twitter. Hilariously lib compared to the Black Panthers 50 years earlier demanding an autonomous country for black people.

Tim Pool got his start with Occupy.

As the poet Billie Joel Armstrong put it "Another protestor crossed the line, to find the money's on the other side."

I don't know if she still controls it, but the "@OccupyWallSt" twitter account was registered by Justine Tunney.

Here is a story about her from 2014:

One of the co-founders of the Occupy Wall Street movement has called on Barack Obama to resign as president, and “appoint Eric Schmidt CEO of America”.

Justine Tunney, a self-styled “champagne tranarchist”, is now a software engineer at Google, but remains involved with Occupy Wall Street, through the occupywallst.org website, which she created.

In the petition, which currently has two signatures (a far cry from the 195,000 who follow the Occupy Wall Street twitter account Tunney started in 2011), she calls on Obama to arrange a national referendum to:

  1. Retire all government employees with full pensions.
  2. Transfer administrative authority to the tech industry.
  3. Appoint Eric Schmidt CEO of America.

You can read some of her tweets from the same time period here: https://web.archive.org/web/20140826051629/http://valleywag.gawker.com/why-does-google-employ-a-pro-slavery-lunatic-1612868507

She is more recently well known from various novel technical hacks, such as llamafile which Mozilla is now collaborating with her on for their client-side slop generator.

I've been following her for a while now due to her technical skills. I haven't seen her do anything at all for IRL politics since then, so it seems like this was a past phase that she hasn't commented on. She makes the claim "created the twitter handle" rather than something more substantial like "runs the account".

I hope she isn't still a weird person but it's hard to know with these ex-Googlers.

Her lack of recantation leads me to assume the worst, that she is still an NRx edgelord but now is just self-aware enough not to shitpost on main. Also, her technical skills are certainly impressive but I don't actually want to see ad-hoc binary distribution of software re-normalized. The world doesn't really need esoteric "actually portable executables", it needs trustworthy supply chains for reproducibly-built binaries.

We live in the biff tannen universe

He was literally modeled after Trump.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 week ago (4 children)

That makes a lot of sense, I didn't realize our big wet boy was already so prominent in the late 80s

[–] [email protected] 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

People have been shitting on Trump for as long as he's been around. Ocean's 13 had their villain modeled after Trump, too. Everyone in NYC has known he's an asshole who pays for nothing, always conducting a grift, and hangs out with people like Epstein. He's had multiple presidential campaigns before 2016.

The rest of the world didn't pay attention to him until he won the republican primary. But he's been a known scumbag for a long time among Hollywood and New York elites.

I've never watched The Apprentice, but I hate it for bringing this asshole back into the public consciousness. Nobody really cared about him in the 2000s until that show presented him as some business genius.

He's been a prominent piece of shit my entire life and I'm (optimistically) middle aged.

Here's The Coup shitting on him in the early 90's.

Gremlins 2 is a satire where the Gremlins take over “Clamp” Tower. Its a little bit Ted Turner too, but Trump is the main target.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I haven't seen that one! Will have to add it to the list

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Gremlins 2 is amazing cause it was made out of pure spite and it shows

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

That's how I knew about Trump as a kid, I didn't know who he was other than some rich guy who Daniel Clamp was a parody of.

David Graeber going to rise from the dead over this.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 week ago

this is actually just part of his long term plan to become a source of sustainable energy after his passing

The krakkker brainpan is not fitted to grasp complex concepts as class conciousness, they can only try to imitate it sporadically,

I should effortpost this (you know, like all my other broken promises) but the success of the current :adventure-time: with luigi-dance has the same roots as Occupy and Anonymous. Memes driving collective action goes back to 4chan's /b/ board that pioneered the horizontal, decentralized, multi-city protests with Operation Chantology. Occupy and the Arab Spring were both hyped by Anonymous at the time as well, when they were flying high with (Lulz|Anti)Sec and DDOSing everything.

It also explains why these movements tend to fizzle out. Memes are fun when everybody is on board, but the meme eventually goes stale and replaced with the next. Rightwing success is less about competence than their ability (and infrastructure) to "force a meme" while others must rely on organic virality. The above "Occupy Mars" is a perfect example of a forced meme and the infrastructure that supports it because nobody else talks about it except Milhouse Musk.
