  1. The CIA World Factbook has all of the facts in the world.
  2. All of the facts in the world are contained within The CIA World Factbook therefore it is impossible for The CIA World Factbook to be biased.
  3. These facts are contained within The CIA World Factbook.

Laplace's Demon, but it's the CIA so it's just Demon.

It's easier to remember we were always at war with Oceania if they keep it in the fact book.

Error!

There was an error on the server. Try refreshing your browser. If that doesn't work, come back at a later time. If the problem persists, you can seek help in the Lemmy support community or Lemmy Matrix room.

sorry comrades I mean it :(

This is like an enhanced "my source is wikipedia". It is such a powerful refinement of Unbiased Free-Thinking.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly wikipedia is far from the worst. Wokepedia garf-troll is mainly guilty of passive voice and lies by omission but sometimes it's not terrible, like the Tienanmen square page.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

By the power of libgen you can sometimes check the sources. Or at least google the authors to see if the first search result is a big picture of htem receiving a novelty check from the Victims of Communism Association

“i always follow citations back to the most objective sources possible: reuters, the associated press, and non-partisan think tanks.”

Even when I was a LIB , I wasn't this fuckin' naive

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah trust the publications of an agency that has murdered to prevent others from making publications.

Literally the guys who created THE LARGEST SUBVERSION CAMPAIGNS IN WORLD HISTORY?

Manipulated countless countries? Lies in every breath? Hid they were doing cocaine smuggling for decades until 2006ish and then killed the guy who exposed them? And wrote the two gunshots to the back of his head a suicide?

Thats the huge authority you consult?

Dude goes to satan themselves for information about god.

There are plenty of other pinocchio-evil fact books. You don't need to pick the overtly evil one.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

My source is that the CIA made it the fuck up :armstrong:

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 year ago

Lib thinking they are using the propaganda to destroy the propaganda meanwhile in reality they just jumped headfirst into propaganda.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Hmm... hear me out. If I check the Factbook and it is in there I know to not trust it

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

Poe's Law, but I'm leaning towards bit because that's exactly the kind of thing I'd say if I wanted to piss off a leftist.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

In the context of all their other comments, that does not look "100% serious" to me. It looks like a facetious comment made to push your buttons. How did you check?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I checked their history and they were serious about everything else they had said. Regular post history on lemmy world. Seemed to be perfectly serious when saying other perfectly liberal things elsewhere in the thread. It was about tiananmen square.

I've also met people in real life who say things like this, its not uncommon. I remember it being the primary source needed in high school during history courses, recent graduates I talked to had similar complaints. It's not that out there.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Yeah, I looked at their comment history. It drips with sarcasm.

Heck, tanks literally CAN’T maim or kill people, that’s not what they’re made for.

In fact, China may be the world’s last bastion of open information and free speech.

They weren't being serious in either of these statements. These aren't alone.

I can see them writing about the bias of sources, and they acknowledge bias in Western sources.

Western media has an underlying bias to shape a narrative that fits the interests of the wealthy

But one of the more obvious clues is this one:—

Any sources that I provide will be dismissed as western propoganda. [sic]

So they've chosen a "source" that will be guaranteed to be written off, just to play with you.

They've also said:—

I don’t generally believe in supporting the US, since it is an emperialist [sic], capitalist country.

Unless you're going to write this off as sarcasm, undermining "they were serious about everything else they had said", you have the contradiction of lack of support for the US but wholesale belief in the CIA. I know cognitive dissonance is everywhere, but there's too much awareness in their writing for me to read the "factbook" comment as anything other than teasing.

They may well be wrong about other things, but I'd bet that you're wrong about this.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

you have the contradiction of lack of support for the US but wholesale belief in the CIA

This is way too common an occurrence for me to think otherwise. And again, all their jokes seemed quite in line for usual liberal nonsense. Even if sarcastic, he was still being anti-china the whole time. Any person can hate the US, many online leftists do, and then peddle the same CIA nonsense to the letter. Any person can acknowledge the bias of western media, but that doesn't mean much when they still buy into a similar narrative, I assume its lip service until proven otherwise. Many will still reflexively think of it as the only "reputable sources".

again, I have heard people defend views like this in real life, dig in their heels and assure of the CIA being "bad then, but really good now" and had to use it as the main source in schooling (college at least had less such idiocy).

The internet is riddled with such insane nonsense, I've seen people claim in essay long explanation that "fascism is the development stage of communism", Liberals thinking that the sputnik launch was faked, that one of the islands in hawaii was set on fire by the Chinese (I actually had one turn up in one of the local instas even after seeing it on hexbear), having to suffer in school during a 'history lesson' on why the PRC killed Muhhamed Ali, and people who consider themselves "left" expressing the opinion that even though the US is bad, the old socialists must all die, so we have to side with them (This was face-to-face, I never talked to them again).

But, that said, the evidence you have makes it more than likely that it is a joke, and that I am wrong. Its more a testament to how deranged people have gotten, or maybe always were, that this is entirely plausible to be something said unironically all the time in many circles. I'll put a disclaimer, the last thing I want to do is misinform my comrades. Thank you for taking the time to point this out, I mean that wholeheartedly.

Much love comrade 🫡

You're welcome. Some of my clues were posted after the "factbook" comment, so they couldn't have tipped you off at the time. And, hey, I still might be wrong. There's certainly no shortage of bad takes. Either way, not everyone is willing to reconsider their position, fewer still that will do so publicly; I commend you for that.
