"is" is correct here, due to the implied nouns. "Data" in this case is an appositive and serves to describe the implied noun, "word." And "plural" is an implied noun for "plural word"

You can see it most clearly if you fill in the implied nouns:

(the word) data is a plural (word)

I know I just thought it would be funny.

This is why I pronounce gif and gnome with a zh sound at the beginning. Like zhazha Gabor's first name. Zhnome, zhif

"One is my name. The other is not."

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 weeks ago

I say data because it makes more sense than saying data.

Screw both options. Instead I say data.

Oh fuck off with that pretentious ass pronunciation. I mean my God, just say "data" like a normal person! So tired of people trying to get all fancy with their pronunciations. Data is the only correct pronunciation. And while we're at it, it's "gif" not "gif" and "gnome" not "gnome"

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago

Obviously the bottom one is English, and the top one is simplified English.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Sometimes I go both ways ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

I worked with some Americans who said "these data" all the time. Even though it was technically correct it sounded so grating I wanted to kill them. Everyone other employee from literally every other country would say "this data" barring those smug fucks from Seattle.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

I say data (dah-ta) when it is information that cannot normally be read by a human, and data (day-ta) when it is information that has been compiled about a topic that is in human readable format.

"The data on the hard drive has been corrupted." - dah-ta

"The data shows that you have a life expectancy of 78 years" -day-ta

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's a noncount noun.

Even people who pretend to believe it's a count noun never use the singular, "a datum".

Let me introduce you to my computer science professors…

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

I just realized I do this too. I need to hit myself with a folding chair.
