unskilled job

OK Mr. Bigshot Khaki Pants, let's see you crane a container off a ship without fucking it up

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

It's an unskilled job but they can't seem to scab it? curious-marx

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Honestly I like 70% think I could do it first try

I have nothing to base that on though since I've never operated heavy machinery.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You probably could do it on the first try.

The skill comes into play when you're meeting the required volume per hour and consistently not smashing a quarter of the containers.

There's also a lot of trades working in ports.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking as well. Give me the crane's manual and unlimited time and I feel like I'll get that shipping container moved. Give me the actual crane operator's job and a boss threatening to fire me if I don't get moving and I'll definitely fuck something up lmao

Working a backhoe, sure. Working a bigass crane without breaking the cargo, the boat, the crane, or other workers? That's a lot less likely.

im built different

Claims to want rates set by the market, gets mad when people negotiate and bargain.

[–] [email protected] 34 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

No you see, The Market is our holy lord and saviour and if we were to bargain for better wages we would offend The Market and it would rain its wrath down upon us!

I at least have to give him a little respect for outright saying “I am the guy in the suit” instead of pretending to be a salt of the earth blue collar yeehaw man. Makes it abundantly clear to even the most uninformed reading this where his class interests lie and may help them connect the dots to understand who exactly it is that hates unions

it's funny

Once again "it's funny" is a way of masking seething rage.

the suit guys get paid the market rate for their labor

Who sets that market rate? THE SAME KIND OF FUCKING ARRANGEMENT THAT DECIDES WHAT CEOS PAY THEMSELVES! obama-medal

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

The "market" also decided a failing retail store was "worth" $400/share while epipens should cost a fortune and EMTs should earn $15/hr in a pandemic.

porky-happy: “Screw the rules, I make them!”

Well that’s not much of a good motivation to respect those rules, is it? Like even as kids we all learned to never play a game against a kid who makes the rules of the game, because we all know the only consistent rule is “only I can win!”

[–] [email protected] 39 points 1 month ago

The synapses are so close it hurts. "I need a union too, but I am too dumb to comprehend. "

[–] [email protected] 38 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I would like to see this guy haul some cargo around

Then he can tell me how unskilled it is

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sometimes I wonder if it wouldn't be more effective to turn it around and say that being the man in the suit is the actual unskill d profession. Neither take is true, but I would enjoy seeing them seeth over it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Bosses need workers much more than workers need bosses.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I’m pmc, pretty much. I have no skills. I’m in awe of people who can do things like unloading ships and whatnot. If everyone were like me we’d starve.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You probably have a lot of skills that would be useful in a centrally planned economy.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Thank you, comrade.

Frank Sobotka: 1

This guy: 0

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago

We are in desperate need of The Wire emojis :sobotka-rage: would be evergreen.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Any maritime work demands a lot of qualifications lmao

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

skilled is when college degree that cost at least $100k

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 month ago

I start working at a place moving stuff around with a forklift and over a decade they train me up to use the huge gantry cranes?

Nah, doesn't sound very believable

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 month ago

“Yeah. I’m a spoiled ungrateful brat. So take one for the team, filthy poor!” ain’t helping your case, dude.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago

They can beat up anyone approaching cranes, and see how government grant works out then after a couple of weeks

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

Damn. Sounds like Mr. Khaki could really use a union

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 month ago

Anyone who wears a suit(well, khaki pants) to work does no labor.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 month ago

market rate for their labor

Every single market rate is a contest of power. Just like the longshoremen here.
