Todays word of the day is "Obdurate"

Meaning

stubbornly persistent in wrongdoing

resistant to persuasion or softening influences

I hope i wasn't the only one who didn't know that one

You weren't, and now we're both a little smarter. Thank you, kind stranger.

The dura root comes from PIE deru- meaning solid or steadfast, and is the same as in the word durable

You were not.

Now tell me how it’s different from “obstinate”

My guess is Obdurate seems to be specifically regarding stubborn wrongdoing while obstinate is more generally stubborn; right or wrong.

ETA: Ok - I’ve looked them up now and looks like my guess wasn’t right. I’m honestly more uncertain now. Any difference is more nuanced than I’d expected.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Haha! I knew it but I haven't heard or read it in the longest time! Not even in crossword puzzles! Definitely time for a comeback.

"The convicted felon candidate is obdurate in his determination to destroy democracy and become Supreme Oligarch of the US."

Now imagine all the Republicans who can't even read it out loud.

Just like the the LDS are "pro-family." What they mean is they are "pro-control." The only reason these assholes have a family is societal pressure and they only reason they value it is because they think they have control over them. Guess what you fucking nut bags, if all you have is hoard of garbage piling up in your garage there is no reason your children need to stick around or listen to a word you say. That is, if your idea of connection is spouting racist, fascist, bullshit constantly.

The difference between myself and a republican my age is they are still hoping that magical payday will come when mom and dad die.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

Yep. Not LDS but years of propaganda that ‘your’ family is ‘people you get to own’ has done real damage. Family values create a fun little hierarchy that many people have been taught to feel entitled to, it’s theirs for ruling over, and taking this socially acceptable power trip AWAY from people who’ve grown to expect it causes BIG EMOTIONS. They don’t seem to see family or societal obligations as real relationships, just requirements to fulfill so they can enjoy a little power. They fundamentally don’t understand that you have to be kind to people and support them if you want them to stay.

The paradox of tolerance is voided by social contract violation.

Those who violate social contract are not entitled to its protections.

Turnabout is fair play.

This cuts too close to home for me, but man, I would happily donate toward a fund to make this into a billboard in a red state.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

it would upset them if they could read.

no but seriously this is too wordy to be an effective billboard.

I know nothing about b shaps' wife but how anyone can stand to be in a room with him for more than 10 seconds is beyond my comprehension.
