The way I've seen seemingly normal people talk about wanting to run over protestors blocking traffic makes me sick. How do a lot of people think this way?

[–] [email protected] 47 points 4 months ago (2 children)

It's disturbing, but a lot of regular people seem very ready and willing to engage in absolutely depraved acts of violence if it weren't for social norms against it. The person who will, unprompted, start talking about how they would run over protestors, is probably the same person who would get their machete out of their shed and walk over to their neighbor's house and redacted because a radio DJ said they were cockroaches who need to be exterminated.

They're not going to machete people to death because that's too much work. They'll kill people in the laziest most convenient way possible though: cars, calling the cops, COVID, buying shit they don't need at the store, etc.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago

"damn, you killed a guy? How'd you do it?"

"Well, I was sitting in a big comfy seat and I flexed my ankle a little bit to push the accelerator. I am very badass"

It's just all the violence that capitalism inflicts on you every second of your life that first completely desensitizes people and then when they are given absolutely zero ways to talk about that violence or even perceive it they go crazy. There's really just the slightest difference between the violence that is everyday "driving a car" compared to "driving over a protester"

I regularly feel this way towards the fucking pricks who drive 13 miles under the speed limit during the 10 miles I'm on a no passing 1 lane road two times every day every day every day every day

Cars are so good and make people empathetic and communal!

"conspiracy to cause public nuisance" LMAO

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 months ago

In the capitalist west you can be imprisoned for years for thought crimes

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

love it when the government jails people with the same logic losers on lemmy use to defed from leftist instances preemptively

[–] [email protected] 38 points 4 months ago (1 children)

British innovations in thoughtcrime.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago

thoughtcrime and precrime! so much innovation

[–] [email protected] 38 points 4 months ago (1 children)

what the fuck, 4-5 year sentences and they didnt even do anything????

[–] [email protected] 11 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Precrime.

Questioning the state? Sounds like you're in the beginnings of forming a rebellion. Off to work camps you go!

[–] [email protected] 37 points 4 months ago (1 children)

if they're going to crucify you regardless you may as well skip the foreplay

[–] [email protected] 21 points 4 months ago

If you’re gonna do a time, do the real crime.

P.s. Don’t do crimes kids, because it’s illegal

[–] [email protected] 28 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

just for PLANNING?

Planning to do something that doesn't kill or even physically harm anyone and you get this? disgusting

[–] [email protected] 26 points 4 months ago

and they didn't even actually do it holy shit. end britain

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 months ago (1 children)

If you're going to get 5 year sentences for stopping traffic then you might as well do something that's actually worth 5 years.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Well, then you get 50 years

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

You say that and yet nobody that's been smashing up weapons factories for the last 2 years has received a single conviction lol

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Did they get caught planning in zoom? Because I have a feeling they'd get at least one or two convictions if they got caught

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

Palestine Action? They're arrested regularly. They don't take it to court because they don't want a weapons company's secrets being open to evidence requests that they have to comply with during the discovery phase of a trial.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They definitely convicted at least a handful of them just last year, but they ended up getting less time than the Just Stop Oil people so maybe you're right that they should have just done something cooler

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Teledyne being an american one may have been the problem there. All the israeli factories such as Elbit have simply had arrested activist walk without charges.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They definitely got charged and were mostly acquitted by a jury. Only one conviction.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

This is the 2021 case and is before the actions really blew up. There have been literally hundreds of people arrested taking part in recent years. They just let people walk out a few hours later. Often they don't even arrest, just detain for some time on site and take details then let people go after.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So it's just the most recent secrets the weapons company is hiding by not going to court? And only specifically the Israeli one? Are you sure you aren't just like...making stuff up?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The reason for it is speculation. But I'm certainly not making stuff up about people being arrested and released over and over and over. Palestine Action is not particularly heavy on hiding identities, most action is performed openly in daylight and unmasked in full view of local population called out to help take part. https://x.com/Pal_action/status/1812464348662575539

I am however concerned about the new attacks on banks they've been doing. These are considerably more likely to get jail time.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 4 months ago

You’d serve less time brandishing a machete in public. The message is clear: don’t even think about fucking with the money, peasant.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 4 months ago

The tyrannical deteriorating monarchy of the "United" Kingdom issues draconian sentences to brave protestors who, through strict regime surveillance, were prevented from even planning disruptive actions.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 4 months ago

But it's literally called a "nuisance"

[–] [email protected] 17 points 4 months ago

Does this radicalize just stop oil further?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 months ago (1 children)

This is exactly why adventurism is cool and good imo. We already lost and we're all dead and going to hell anyway. If you have the conviction to do something then do something worthwhile.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 4 months ago

Imma be real here, I understand frustration of generic commuters. Why not sink yachts, scratch lambos and burn mansions. Also malm has a book.

Also don’t plan over zoom for myriad of reasons.
