Bit idea: JRPG where you go on an epic quest to find your dad, who turns out to be an eldritch horror chaos god, but when you go to kill him, it turns out he was actually the United States all along
wasn't that final fantasy 10?
10, kind of 4, probably at least one Breath of Fire game, one of the Shadow Hearts games...
Have I been too harsh on the FF series?
Probably not, its still a shit genre, but 10 sounds playable now.
7 is lit just cause you play as a left-wing paramilitary doing ecoterrorism, taking down the megacorp that is the government. I expected them to tone that down in the remake but they managed to go full "the ecoterrorists did nothing wrong", instead, and you spend most of part 1 organizing the slums for community defense against the megacorp/cops. dunno who's reading theory at square, but props.
The united states is lavos if you think about it
I like how there's a second Square character to cover up Monolith representation lmao
Since the merger theres actually three Square characters here lol.
That said Xenoblade is cool but Chrono Trigger is the all time greatest so I agree with the decision.
That merger is like 20+ years old, but I still think of DQ as an Enix thing lol.

Toriyama sensei can have two characters designs represented lol
Both
I’m a huge sucker for JRPG’s. One of the first emulators I had was a SNES one that was stuffed with JRPG’s. I spent hours playing them over and over. I still get a weird tinge of nostalgia when I hear sounds from Chrono Trigger
Chrono Trigger isn't like, my personal favorite game because there are games that have more like, significance to me. But it is the game that I consider the "best game I've played" from like, objective standards if you know what I mean?
It’s not really mine either. Dragon Quest 8 is probably that for me. My nostalgia for games is entirely based on the soundtrack.
Mine is A Link Between Worlds (which isnt a JRPG lol) or Tales of Symphonia (which is! so yay!) I think.
earthbound and mother 3 my beloveddddddddddddddddddddddddd
Been playing through Earthbound and streaming it for my girlfriend a bit lately. Its really enjoyable. The early game is SO difficult and even after you get party members the inventory management can be annoying, but the writing is so clever that its all very worth it. I am admitedly using an exploit to make PP management not as much of a worry at my girlfriend's recomendation and I'm worried its making the game too easy lol, but I'm still having a very good time exploring what the game has to offer.
I'm really excited to try Mother 3 as well. Though that might be a bit because me and my gf agreed I stream me playing Earthbound for her, then she streams her playing Chrono Trigger for me, before we do Mother 3.
yea earthbound is pretty difficult in the beginning (the first boss is kinda shit) and then gets more easier... until fourside and then the last "your sancturary" location
mother 3 in many ways is different from earthbound, its less surrealistic, more story-based and combat is a bit more streamlined but its also Super Good. both of them are one of my favourite games, i hope you enjoy mother 3 when you get to it :::D
Liked JRPGs as a kid. Don't now. The stories are just anime for the most part, the gameplay is a skinner box where the treat pellets are cutscenes, and once I'd read some books and whatever, they generally come off as pretty trite. No matter the twist on it, it's shonen with what is barely gameplay and I don't like shonen. There are good ones, Earthbound and Mother 3 are something else (aside from the gameplay which is, pretty eh at best tbh), Chrono Trigger (of course), I can fuck with the Tales games cause of the gameplay and I eat tactical jrpgs for breakfast but that's cause I really like turn based strategy games. Your standard party vs monster with overworld and battle screens and menus just bug me now. The ones I have enjoyed are very very strategy heavy or are like Bug Fable or Mario and Luigi with good real time elements. Pokémon could be cool

Me as a kid cheating this system by running from battles so I could get to the next cutscene or town to talk to people in (yes, I liked getting one line of dialoug from each NPC that much). Then ending up coming up against a boss that I'm underleveled for, getting stuck, and quitting.
Honestly for me growing up has been learning to enjoy the gameplay part more as well. I get what you're saying though. But personally I like the narratives of pretty much every game in the FF series a lot, for example. And the Tales series as you mention. Other ones have more simple ones but still feel satisfying to me to explore it. I just find that method of narrative exploration very rewarding.
But I also like Shonen lol so that probably has something to do with it.
Liking Shonen will get you everywhere with JRPGs. Some FF games have their moments I've played 1-7 as well as 10 and 12, there's some pretty good stuff there, but I wouldn't really rank any above YA quality, which is the target audience and I liked it then. Tales games have good characters usually but the narrative is usually both convolulted and pretty shallow at the same time. I also believe there's only about 25 or so games that actually have really good stories, and that's leaving room for ones I haven't played.
I hate JRPGs
Can I still do it if I'm an SRPG loser instead
Of course!
(Tbh Fire Emblem is basically a JRPG for me anyway because if anime and tropes lol).
Have you played any Fire Emblem games? You should try Genealogy of the Holy War if not! It's of the same era as Tactics Ogre lol.
I've only played Awakening and Fates, which are okay imo but not of note. I did think Genealogy was probably worth playing honestly.
Yeah, Genealogy, Thracia 776, the GBA games, and Three Houses are the series highlights imo. You might dig the SFC games given how much you liked TO.
Heard good things about the GameCube one, but I haven't gotten around to playing it.
Woah a Gamecube game!!! Thracia is the super late SFC release right? I'm reasonably sure I will dig them, although the series-long focus on and mechanics around relationships and bloodlines is kinda...
Yeah, Thracia had a 1999 release lmao - originally on this Japan-only flash card format.
I forgot to mention the 3DS remake of FE Gaiden - Shadows of Valentia. It's super fun and pretty. It also doesn't have the whole cishet romance and have kids thing in it.

Surprisingly, this is mostly from Awakening snagging a popular feature from Genealogy and making it super cringe. It's a little less in your face in Genealogy since the Support conversations didn't come into the series until the GBA games. Your little chess pieces just tick off invisible points and contribute (stats, gear) to a unit for the second half of the game. If the cishet-normative stuff puts you off, I'd double down on my rec for Gaiden or its 3DS remake lol.
The Nintendo Power kiosk cart!! I love to see it.
It also doesn't have the whole cishet romance and have kids thing in it.
Is it bad that this is the biggest selling point for any FE to me so far? I have had Valentia on my 3DS for a while.
Yeah okay well maybe =)
MOTHER 2: The most They Might Be Giants game to not be a They Might Be Giants game
