Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

That will never not be funny. Guy nuked his whole fame status in that one moment.

What's the context?

(Thanks for the answers, everybody!)

The short of it is that there was a Reddit poweruser named Unidan who had a background in bird science. Very popular, very often upvoted, tons of karma.

Unfortunately he was found to be vote manipulating on sockpuppets to elevate his content and downvote others, and IIRC this infamous jackdaw copypasta is the one that blew his cover.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

Reddit power users always suck. So do Lemmy power users

[–] [email protected] 19 points 7 months ago (1 children)

An infromative biologist redditor named unidan made the comment above. The majority of reddit loved him. Whenever he posted a comment, reddit would literally get on their knees to jerk and suck him off with upvotes. That and the usual tone of his comments made me dislike him. He had a hissy fit with another redditor over a crows/jackdaws. He revealed that he made alts to downvote other redditors and upvote himself, even if the other redditor was correct. His downfall was very satisfying lol

Yeah some of his posts were just flat wrong too, but it was like shouting against a hurricane with how popular he was.

He knew his crow stuff, no doubt, but people thought he was like Reddit’s biologist who was an expert on every subfield which of course no one is. But he didn’t seem to want to admit that and instead posted some nonsense.

I've yet to see anything like this emerge from Lemmy itself; no real platform-wide infamous episode. I wonder what the first Lemmy-based episode of Whang! is going to be?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

No drama yet AFAIK but The Picard Manuveur is everywhere

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

That's just Gallowboobs in secret though.

My wife when we first moved to Wyoming: "What a pretty and dainty bird. What is it?"

Me: That's a Magpie.

Magpie: *bathes in blood as it feasts on the flesh of a dead elk*

My wife:

[–] [email protected] 27 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Magpies are the bird equivalent of that person everyone thinks is hot as long as they don't say anything

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

Fuck, maybe that's why my wife calls me a magpie, but also tells me to shut up sometimes. (I like shiny things)

You picked a Hitchcock frame as a meme and didn't go for one from Birds. Shame!

Edit

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago

I went Birds first but didn't find one that really fit, hence Psycho.

Not pictured:
The adorable, if thiefish Grey Jay, aka the Whiskey Jack.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Oh wow these are some adorable little dudes.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

Most mountain resorts of BC have them, they'll eat from your hand if you hold it out flat for them.

If they're feeling greedy though they'll also just take unoffered food as you're trying to eat it.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Magpies are the friendliest birds for people but I almost feel bad about it because they're dicks to other birds.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 7 months ago

In my country everyone hates Magpies because they're aggressive to people

Australian Magpies aren't corvids, they're butcherbirds, unrelated to the European magpie.

They're cute, but they're definitely dicks.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I just looked them up. They look pretty cool. Australian_Magpie_1,_jjron,_5.07_highlight

[–] [email protected] 12 points 7 months ago

That’s just a crow that’s into electronic music

That strain of swooping death appears every year around September during Australian magpie swoopy Boi season.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Australian magpies are not corvids. Not closely related to any of these birds, or to Eurasian magpies.

Steller's Jay fits in with the family and makes sure the blue jay doesn't get lonely

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

Scrub jay checking in

[–] [email protected] 9 points 7 months ago

That man looks like a mime from hell

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 months ago

They scream the loudest though.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 months ago
[–] [email protected] 5 points 7 months ago

I could see him being more metal than his entire family.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Strive to be the Blue Jay in your family of Ravens.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Note, this picture is inverted for personality.

Blue jays are very stupid and very aggressive.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

The stellar jays are dumb, but have learned to not be dixks around the other songbirds where I live.

They do a decent red tailed hawk cry imitation that's wild.

[–] FilterItOut 1 points 7 months ago

Aye, the first time a blue jay tore the head off of a smaller bird in its nest was a real head turner for me.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The normal looking one looks adopted. Like the native kid from King of the hill

[–] [email protected] 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

"adopted" lol. I think you missed a big sub plot, my guy.
