Confirmed: Queer people have iron deficiency.

Obviously this is a joke, but there used to be an important reason we kept the flags wrinkled like that: it meant that you never knew who had bought a flag at a Pride event and who brought one they owned.

This meant that people who were 'caught' at an event by friends or family they weren't out to, they could say they just bought the flag to support the cause. It also meant there was no way to tell who had been there longer than others.

Beautiful reasons but there's an easier one... we don't want our flags to be straight (I only ironed my trans flag).

I do not really understand what you mean. What is the difference? If it is "okay" to buy a flag now to support the cause, why would it not be okay to have done so a year ago?

Also, sounds like this person would not hang the flag in their room, so the folding marks would be there anyway?

"I was just caught up in the moment supporting my friends" vs "I am an active and participating member of the queer community"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Kinda sound made up tbh

[–] [email protected] 70 points 6 months ago

What they want us to do? Straight-en it?

[–] [email protected] 68 points 6 months ago (1 children)

But keeping them unironed and non-“straight” seems pretty on brand.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 6 months ago

Come on, give them a chance, do you know how long these flags were in the closet?

[–] [email protected] 55 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Every queer person who sees my flag asks "Yours is ironed?"

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago

Well... Is it?

[–] [email protected] 38 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Remember to iron your flags, ~~fa~~ friends ☺️

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (3 children)

What if I don't own an iron?

[–] [email protected] 37 points 6 months ago

Hang it on your shower curtain rod, run a hot water only shower to steam up the room and close the door.

PS: A "make out" session in the steamed up room while you wait for the flag to relax is a great way to not let all that steam go to waste.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 6 months ago

Wash and dry it, then hang it up again. If it's not washable, hanging it in a bathroom with a shower may help to steam the wrinkles out over time.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Get a clothes steamer. They’re cheaper and more useful.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I don't know about cheaper, a bottom of the barrel iron is like $10. More useful, for sure.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Same goes for a steamer. You just have to refill it more often.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Is that safe for the plasticy synthetic ones? I'd try but I don't want to melt or burn it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

i think you need to iron it through a wet towel

[–] [email protected] 19 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

What's with the 3rd flag in the first picture? Just looks like an elongated falg of Romania or Chad. Or is it just a wish.com rainbow flag?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago

Might be the pansexual flag, but it looks more red than pink to me.

https://equity.ok.ubc.ca/pride-flags/

I was wondering what the black-gray-white-green was and found this database.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

I didn't know there was so many that were so similar, it's really interesting.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

There's also black-grey-white-purple, or in direct terms, the Asexual flag, the one you mentioned being for Aromantic. There's also a specific flag for both combined, or "Aroace", because you can be one, the other, or both at the same time.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Its a pansexual flag that isn't super accurate in the shades

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 months ago

I feel personally attacked right now

Do lots of people keep irons these days? I don't have one or know anyone with one. Also the fact these flags are usually cheap as fuck synthetic materials that would literally melt if you ironed them. My actual cotton ones lost the creases on their own. The cheap plastic ones look like I just put them up today the creases are still that crisp.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

Toss it in the dryer on low, that'll get wrinkles out.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

Even cheap shitty irons have settings for synthetics.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Bachelor hack: heat some water in a pot on the stove, and use it to iron your clothes. For a synthetic material like this, you'll definitely want to keep it well below boiling, though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

My sister got a heat gun for art stuff... I wonder if that would work. Or just a hair blow drier which we have. The creases do kinda bug me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Just get an iron. They can't be expensive.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

You can spray water on it with a spray bottle and shake it out to get rid of most wrinkles (works great on clothes but never tried flags)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I just checked, and mine is still wrinkly

I mistakenly thought the wrinkles would go away with time

[–] [email protected] 17 points 6 months ago

They likely would if it wasn't a synthetic blend, which pretty much all of these flags are.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I have a rainbow flag made from cotton, and it doesn't wrinkle at all. Also, it's like 3 meters wide

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago

Size queen.

Do people not own ironing boards anymore?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 months ago (2 children)

I’ve literally not met a single person who owns an ironing board under the age of 40, and since most of the Gen X I know were punks, even there it’s a very rare thing. I’ve personally only ever used one in hotels, because might as well since it’s there.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago

I'm 24 and I own one! Well, my husband brought it into the household when we moved in together. And he only owned one because is mother is an insane clean freak that will iron literally everything, even towels and socks/underwear.

We've used it 4 times in the past 5 years.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Then you don't know anyone who owns a sewing machine.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

Personally I just iron on my floor when I've got a shirt that needs ironing

Yeah it's not the best but it works in a pinch

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

You don't even need an ironing board. I lay a bath towel on my table and iron on that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 months ago

I don't own any flags myself, I only own pins. If I did own flags though I would iron them so they look nice.

I don't really plan on getting them though unless I can find at least an AroAce flag in the purple and green color scheme. Which I haven't up until now, technically I couldn't find a pin either but pins are easy to get custom made, flags not so much (at least I never looked into it).
