The problem with Wiimotes is that they use an outdated Bluetooth standard. I guess it isn't supported anymore due to security concerns. On top of that the built-in Wiimote drivers suck ass and have nonsensical bindings.

I should get healthy, learn driver programming and fix this.

Luckily Cwiid should still work. You'll just have to build it yourself as it's not packaged or supported anymore. I usually use wmgui or wminput. Especially the latter is pretty powerful with everything you can set up.

But it is more prone to breakage which can result in an explosion.

Those two already worked well before Valve revolutionised game compatibility. Nowadays it is almost trivial to run any game. Only a handful of games are problematic. Mostly those with kernel level anti cheat that didn't enable Linux compatibility.
