Elaine Ruth Ingham, groundbreaking microbiologist and a leader in the regenerative agriculture movement, died on Monday in Fort Mill, South Carolina, with her husband by her side. She was 73 years old.

Ingham was known for her soil science research that developed the concept of the soil food web. She championed the critical role of microorganisms in building healthy, sustainable ecosystems. As a researcher, educator, and mentor, her pioneering studies and advocacy empowered farmers, scientists, and environmentalists worldwide to restore and sustain soil health.

Ingham’s work, including dozens of research papers published in scientific journals in the 1980s and 1990s, brought her to an early understanding of the importance of soil microbiology for plant health. Her influential popular publications include the Soil Biology Primer, published by the Natural Resources Conservation Services Soil Quality Institute, with the well-known image of the soil food web used by educators around the world to discuss the role of microorganisms in soil.

During the first Trump administration there was often the feeling of being unable to escape the news. Every day, a new presidential proclamation via Twitter. Every day, a comment made in a press gaggle with potentially staggering implications. For many, the impact was immediate; but more often than not, the threat remained conceptual. This time around is different; things are actually getting materially worse each day, and the human brain is unequipped to notice, let alone process, all of it.

From the continued genocide in Gaza and the disappearing of immigrants off our streets by federal agents, to the dismantling of our health care infrastructure and the ever-growing scourge of gun violence, the pace of news is relentless. Even so, it’s crucial to take stock of events that each on their own would have once been considered a catastrophe, especially when much of major American media would give you the impression that the only thing that happened over the weekend was Charlie Kirk’s hagiographic memorial.

Let’s walk through a few important stories you may have missed—

Hundreds of people detained at the Alligator Alcatraz immigration processing center west of Miami, Florida, appear to have vanished. They have disappeared from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) online database, and their lawyers and families have been unable to locate them, according to immigrant advocacy groups.

Sinclair’s ABC stations will air a special in remembrance of Charlie Kirk this Friday, during Jimmy Kimmel Live’s timeslot. The special will also air across all Sinclair stations this weekend.

A protester was acquitted Wednesday of charges that he assaulted a federal agent during widespread protests against immigration crackdowns in Los Angeles, just hours after one of the faces of President Trump’s enforcement policies took the stand to testify against him.

U.S. Border Patrol Sector Chief Gregory Bovino — the brash agent who led a phalanx of military personnel into MacArthur Park this summer — was called as a witness Wednesday in a federal misdemeanor assault case against Brayan Ramos-Brito, who was accused of striking a federal agent.

Bovino, who flew in to testify from Chicago, the latest city targeted for an immigration enforcement surge, said he witnessed the alleged assault committed by Ramos-Brito in Paramount on June 7.

Bovino was questioned by the defense about previous comments he made referring to undocumented immigrants as “scum.”

The jury came back with the acquittal after a little over an hour of deliberations.

I read a ~~great thread on Bluesky earlier~~ detailing how many times Kash Patel may have completely botched this case by all the stupid things he's said on FOX today. Definitely worth a read!

*Edit to add ~~Skyview thread unroll link~~

*Edit #2: it was pointed out in the comment below that many folks in the thread I linked are calling into question the OOP's claims and professional background. After a brief view myself, there is at least one person within those comments whom I do believe when they say its "full of errors"
I'm leaving my original comment up for now for posterity sake, but I am more than willing to remove it if that would be more appropriate.

Encampment sweeps kill.

https://www.propublica.org/article/portland-homeless-deaths-multnomah-county

But although the city spent roughly $200,000 per homeless resident throughout that time, deaths of homeless people recorded in the county quadrupled, climbing from 113 in 2019 to more than 450 in 2023, according to the most recent data from the Multnomah County Health Department. The rise in deaths far outpaces the growth in the homeless population, which was recorded at 6,300 by a 2023 county census, a number most agree is an undercount...

These deaths came during the same period that Portland began a two-pronged response to public pressure over homelessness. City leaders began moving homeless people out of public view by removing tents at a rate far surpassing those of its West Coast peers. Since 2021, it carried out 19,000 sweeps, and it dismantled over 20 encampments per day in 2024, according to city records.

At the same time, the city reduced money for stable permanent housing while dramatically increasing its investment in temporary shelters...

This is a really great write-up, buts it’s a shame that the article does not mention that the building the school is moving into is owned by the same people that own the ICE building…

https://www.streetroots.org/news/2025/08/05/k-8-school-next-door-portland-ice-facility-plans-immediate-move

But several board members, staff and students’ parents said moving to the Bridges building could leave immigrant students at risk.

That building is owned by local real estate company Lindquist Development, which also owns the building ICE leases. Stuart Linquist, the company’s president, struck a protester with his Mercedes outside the ICE facility in 2018, and later threatened to fight anti-ICE protestors in an interview with Willamette Week about the incident.

Some Cottonwood staff and board members fear Lindquist could allow ICE agents into the building while students are in classes, according to sources who spoke to Street Roots on condition of anonymity.

Following the altercation, dozens of community members as well as federal agents with the Homeland Security Investigations vests gathered outside the home.

At least one person was arrested for assaulting a federal officer, San Bernardino police said.

But the person was set free "despite refusing to comply and wounding officers," the DHS said.

It really does sound like they're just making shit up as they go. Would they really set an arrestee free after "assaulting and wounding" one of theirs? I call bull shit.

The push to write in Biden on the ballot didn't go completely smoothly. The weekend before New Hampshire's primary, thousands of voters in the state received robocalls that used deep faked audio of the president in an attempt to dissuade them from turning out.

Whatever your thoughts on electoral politics are, this shit right here is such a terrifying prospect for the future...
