I want to apologize for changing the description without telling people first. After reading arguments about how AI has been so overhyped, I'm not that frightened by it. It's awful that it hallucinates, and that it just spews garbage onto YouTube and Facebook, but it won't completely upend society. I'll have articles abound on AI hype, because they're quite funny, and gives me a sense of ease knowing that, despite blatant lies being easy to tell, it's way harder to fake actual evidence.

I also want to factor in people who think that there's nothing anyone can do. I've come to realize that there might not be a way to attack OpenAI, MidJourney, or Stable Diffusion. These people, which I will call Doomers from an AIHWOS article, are perfectly welcome here. You can certainly come along and read the AI Hype Wall Of Shame, or the diminishing returns of Deep Learning. Maybe one can even become a Mod!

Boosters, or people who heavily use AI and see it as a source of good, ARE NOT ALLOWED HERE! I've seen Boosters dox, threaten, and harass artists over on Reddit and Twitter, and they constantly champion artists losing their jobs. They go against the very purpose of this community. If I hear a comment on here saying that AI is "making things good" or cheering on putting anyone out of a job, and the commenter does not retract their statement, said commenter will be permanently banned. FA&FO.

Alright, I just want to clarify that I've never modded a Lemmy community before. I just have the mantra of "if nobody's doing the right thing, do it yourself". I was also motivated by the decision from u/spez to let an unknown AI company use Reddit's imagery. If you know how to moderate well, please let me know. Also, feel free to discuss ways to attack AI development, and if you have evidence of AIBros being cruel and remorseless, make sure to save the evidence for people "on the fence". Remember, we don't know if AI is unstoppable. AI uses up loads of energy to be powered, and tons of circuitry. There may very well be an end to this cruelty, and it's up to us to begin that end.

That marketing may have outstripped reality. Early reports from Mythos preview users including AWS and Mozilla indicate that while the model is very good and very fast at finding vulnerabilities, and requires less hands-on guidance from security engineers - making it a welcome time-saver for the human teams - it has yet to eclipse human security researchers.

"So far we've found no category or complexity of vulnerability that humans can find that this model can't," Mozilla CTO Bobby Holley said, after revealing that Mythos found 271 vulnerabilities in Firefox 150. Then he added: "We also haven't seen any bugs that couldn't have been found by an elite human researcher." In other words, it's like adding an automated security researcher to your team. Not a zero-day machine that's too dangerous for the world.

The U.S. military’s secretive Special Operations Command plans to establish its first-ever center for AI-driven missions like targeted assassinations.

Autonomous warfare is all the rage at the Pentagon, where computers and artificial intelligence process intelligence data, select targets and then transmit kill orders to a waiting robot, or a “loitering” missile or airplane.

The new “Special Operations Autonomous Warfare Center” is referenced in the $1.5 trillion Department of War budget request to Congress this week.

Malus’s site says. "Our proprietary AI robots independently recreate any open source project from scratch. The result? Legally distinct code with corporate-friendly licensing. No attribution. No copyleft. No problems."...

"Some licenses require you to contribute improvements back. Your shareholders didn't invest in your company so you could help strangers," Malus’s site says. "Is your legal team frustrated with the attribution clause? Tired of putting 'Portions of this software…' in your documentation? Those maintainers worked for free - why should they get credit?"

I am sorry, but… F*CK YOU, Malus, and the inhuman "developers" of Malus, indeed.

Such a… f*cking… ineffable sorrow…
No… f*cking… words…

The artificial intelligence industry's data center boom is the latest chapter in a long history of environmental racism and resource exploitation in vulnerable Native communities, says Oglala Lakota and Northern Cheyenne activist Krystal Two Bulls, the executive director of Honor the Earth, an Indigenous-led environmental justice organization that is tracking over 100 proposed data center projects on tribal and rural lands. We speak to Two Bulls about the myriad impacts of what she calls a "modern-day iteration" of "settler colonialism," including noise pollution, cancers and respiratory illnesses, water depletion, energy grid overload and even "ecological collapse." As tech companies set their sights on Indigenous lands, Two Bulls says, "We're always the one that ends up having to sacrifice our relationship to land, air, water, our communities and our nonhuman relatives."

I'm not sure if there's a better way to reach the mods, so I created this meta post.

I'm referring to the three pinned posts on the main page of the community. "AI Is Eating Data Center Power Demand—and It’s Only Getting Worse", "Some changes, and Boosters vs Doomers", and "For Starters". A couple of them are more than 2 years old now, and the other is almost a year old. I don't think they're useful anymore.

Meta will begin tracking the mouse movements, clicks, and keystrokes of its US employees to generate high-quality training data for future AI agents, Reuters reports...

Meta’s move comes as major tech companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity, have recently introduced new tools that let AI agents take over your computer or web browser to complete certain tasks. Ars’ initial tests of some of these consumer offerings showed a surprising ability to convert many natural-language commands into virtual actions, with some significant limitations and brittleness regarding long-term automated tasks.

Meta has also reportedly begun setting AI usage goals among some employees, including coders and engineers. The company is also reportedly planning to start laying off up to 10 percent of its global workforce starting in May.
...

Comments

- Incredibly dystopian. Of course this won’t be used for workplace surveillance at all…
- Step 5. Meta sells this data to advertising companies to display ads to worker/consumers... Profit...

🤖 Honestly you can't make this up:

Human Robot #Zuckerberg is gonna put an #AI based smart keylogger on his employees computers.

Nothing says we don't trust you and don't appreciate you like a regular screenshot of your work screen.

No more NSFW! Welcome to the future baby!

Guess them employees are gonna get a taste of their own medicine for once.

Seems like everything is going according to plan.

Use the employees data to train MaiRK, so Meta can finally become a synonym for MaiRK. https://mastodon.social/@madeindex/116402482806274908

Eventually we will only see his superintelligence controlling everything. https://mastodon.social/@madeindex/115871208581092120

Narcissism 2026 version 😋

If you are thinking: Wouldn't this make people quit? Meta is banking on it: https://www.reuters.com/world/meta-targets-may-20-first-wave-layoffs-additional-cuts-later-2026-2026-04-17/

Google confirms its latest update can scan all your photos to “use actual images of you and your loved ones” in AI image generation. That means Gemini seeing who you know and what you do. You likely have tens or hundreds of thousands of photos. They’re all exposed if you update.

I installed one of these myself recently, and it's been pretty interesting to see which sites might use AI-generated text. It's not a guarantee that they're AI-generated of course, but it definitely helps to make me think twice.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
