I'm looking for linux software or plugin that, in addition to putting the front and back cover side by side on the same leaf etc, allows me to subdivide a long pdf into sections of 8 leaves or so, which can each be printed and stapled, before final assembly of the sections into a pamphlet or booklet.

It would make me very happy if it runs locally, rather than being a web page.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of thing?

I finished my shawl!! (thelemmy.club)

It’s actually been finished for a while. Was wanting to block it first before posting but I haven’t found the space so I’m just posting it now. Bonus cat too!

Getting back into crochet and really happy with how this shawl is turning out!! Pic isn’t great because it’s getting kinda big but I’ll post a better one once it’s done. It’s been fun to count out my stitches to my four month old, they love it lol

I posted about my Legion Imperialis project a while ago.

Here we have two bases of Tech-Thralls from the Mechanicum faction all painted up.

This is just a test paint job so I might do some touchups later. I think Im going to try a brighter red next time on the other models.

I only need ten of the Techthralls for my army, so the overall work isnt too bad.

I havent painted minis in ages, and Im completely new to the 8mm scale its definitely a fun change of pace.

Below are two bases of Tech Thralls from the Mechanicum faction. The game is Legion Imperialis, an 8mm tabletop wargame set during the Horus Heresy (Warhammer 30K). These are two test units primed with Wraithbone. Im going to try painting them with Army Painter Speedpaints.

And yes im aware the models are super tiny. Which brings its own challenges but also appeal to the game and the painting.

I might post the one or the other progress pic over time. Of the whole army I mean . These guys wont take me that long I hope

Hi everyone! Welcome to the first monthly Hobbies thread, where you're free to post whatever you want that might be hobby related where we can:

  • Share in-progress projects
  • Share old/finished projects
  • Ask for advice, input, feedback, motivation, or suggestions
  • Info dump on your fave hobbies
  • Make community requests/suggestions
  • Pine over projects you haven't done yet, or those projects that never seem to be finished

And whatever else hobby-related!

I'll try to make sure a new thread is up by the first Friday of each month going forward. I hope every level of hobbyist will join in; we all start somewhere and perfection is never a requirement.

Hope you have a happy hobby October!

Hi Everyone! kirby-wave Attached pic is an amigurumi octopus I made a little while ago with glow-in-the-dark-thread. I offered to step up as a mod here, and I just wanted to say hello and see if anyone wanted to give any feedback/make any requests for changes or improvements to the comm going forward.

We're a pretty small community, but I thought it might be cool to do a monthly "What are you working on/what did you do this month" thread for users to share in-progress or unfinished projects or ideas who might not want to make a whole post about what they've been up to and leave it up for a couple days...OR we can just keep things as-is. Either way, happy to be here. stalin-heart

Only 3D print settings I tweaked are for the ironing and then I've adjusted the models a bit for color, depending on the filament I have on hand. Here are some more:

I didn't design any of these, but I did find out these are made with a software called Hueforge and I intend to try to learn it and make my own models. I think the look pretty neat and I'm excited to experiment with making my own designs.

So anywho, I was watching Tom Mason's miniature archive where he goes through all of the sculpts he's done over the years and I stumbled upon his work he did for HeroClix. I never played HC or Mech Warrior, but I did play Mage Knight before I got into Warhammer. Beneath that shitty paint job, most of these figures are actually really good sculpts. Some examples:

The before shot.

...and after. Like holy shit there's faces and teeth on these. Some more I stripped:

Okay so how did I do this?

  1. As far as I know, all WizKids models are vinyl sculpts with vinyl paint. This means some of the paint is fused to the model, no matter how much you scrub, scrape, or strip.

  2. I used acetone. Honestly amazed they still let people buy this shit from any hardware store. You want to put the models into a glass or metal container with a sealable lid. Pour in the acetone to cover each model in the container.

  3. Let it sit for about 30 minutes to an hour. You'll want to stir or shake the brew to make sure every part of the models are exposed to the acetone. After an hour, you run the risk of dissolving the mini completely. Use caution.

  4. Pull a mini out of the acetone and wipe it off with a towel. You want to get as much paint off as you can, then put it in water and dish soap.

  5. Start scrubbing. I used old toothbrushes and a wire brush to get the paint off. A hobby knife was used to pick globs of paint out of crevices. The Elf up there holding a sack and a sword in the other hand? Originally there wasn't a gap between her left arm and her torso. I had to scrape it out, there was so much paint in there.

  6. You might need to put a model back in once you've cleaned off quite a bit. Be wary of how long a second acetone bath goes on.

  7. Once the model is clear of sludge and muck, rinse it off in the dishwater, then give it a quick bath and scrub in isopropyl alcohol (70% is good enough)

  8. Now you have an unpainted model you can use in other games or you can redo the original 'clix piece. I'm planning on using mine for a beastmen army and for a Rangers of Shadow Deep campaign.

The nice thing about this is how dead these games are now so you can often find the minis in bulk for dirt cheap. They work at 28mm scale. Also I'm dozing off so I'll post later

I was inspired by this: https://www.printables.com/model/86396-self-defense-cat but wanted to make it more robust, so I traced the shape and made my own model in pirated Solidworks. One side looks better than the other but came out well overall I think. It’s thicker and at 100% infill. Also much sharper. Would certainly hurt to get punched in the face with this… “keychain”.

EDIT: I'd be happy to share the file too if anyone wants it. I'm not sure where I could upload it but I'd be willing to try.

i did this by loosely following this tutorial video. it's more of a work in progress cause my hands got tired but my plan is to keep making these until whittling squirrels comes easy to me.

for next time i want to make sure i follow the tutorial more closely cause i sort of watched it a few times then ran with it. i need to practice some cuts that i'm really struggling with to define the shapes more. also this poor squirrels tail turned out much too small, should be big and fluffy looking meow-tableflip

Decided to make a sierpinski's tetrahedron as a first REAL project! I built a shitty angleiron workbench (with an old door ziptied onto it as the tabletop) before but I'm actually trying this time so it's different

170 welds completed so far crab-party !! So, only 346 left to go!!... doggirl-tears

This was a really good idea until I remembered how complex fractals are, like GIRL, DUH, fuck was I thinking hahaha

Its REALLY scuffed though, I'm talkin like using my stick welder to melt a half inch off the end off of the pieces I had precut to make it shorter so it will fit in the actual dimensions needed, I've been holding the smallest (~2") pieces with a wrench and holding it in place freehand. It's been a lot of fun so far, and I'm definitely improving as I go, I weld my welding stick to my stock way less often now, and achieve arc much more reliably too, which is cool to see my own progress within the project!

I hurt my shoulder a bit ago so I haven't been able to do much lately, but welding is pretty low impact in that I mostly just sit on a folding chair in my driveway next to my shitty workbench lol

Have some more views!

Some time ago I mentioned to my partner that I've always wanted a microscope as a hobby 🔬 they saved some money and got a cheap one for me recently, and I'm having so much fun!

Pictured is the thin peel that's intimate with the garlic clove, stained with eosin (I think) and magnified x1200. It's great because it's already 1 cell thick 🤏

What are some tips you guys have for a beginner? I'm looking into buying methylene blue for staining too.

still new to english paper piecing but it's lots of fun! i think my stitching is ok but i feel like i'm still trying to find the balance of making sure i'm not packing in too many stitches or going too deep / shallow.

here's a photo of the back

and now i'm preparing to try and do a pattern similar to this next :3c

Really came down to the wire to get this done before pride month was over, but, after many months, I'm finally happy with how it looks! This was supposed to be my "low-effort army", so much for that lmao.

Been playing around with the Dremel Digilab available at my library, hoping that I can make myself some poorhammer units. I know these detailed pieces really need to be printed on a fancy resin printer, but $4 wasn't a bad price to experiment with scale shrug-outta-hecks. I was hoping I could attempt to make some Battletech minis, too, but I'll probably need to use a resin printer for that, too

The smaller/thinner bits totally got fucked up tho lol

If anyone has any resin printer services they recommend, let me know!

The only thing I didn't already have a printable model for was a Daemon Prince/Be'lakor, so I found these two kits for a very nice discount

My other 675 points are three War Dogs and fifteen Nurgling swarms (very proud of both of these, also, how're you gonna call something a "War Dog" and not have it be a pupper, come the hell on)

I am really happy with how this turned out. It's exactly what I was going for: a rich, really warm blue/almost black. Both the blue and the red show very clearly through in different places. What's wild is how transformative the black paste wax was. Here is a before pic

I was definitely nervous about it looking too garish at that point.

The finish is 2 coats of red milk paint followed by a single coat of a 1# shellac cut. Quick sand with 240 and 4 coats of blue milk paint, followed by the paste wax. All finishes were made by me and are non toxic. The tactile effect of the beeswax is also very pleasant.

The idea is that with use the black and blue will wear away revealing the red underneath which will resist just a bit more for the shellac addition. The wax of course is easy to top off, so there's a little more control there in terms of wear and application.

Here is the interior:

Still needs a couple of finishing touches-- hangers for the smaller hand saws and a box for the combo plane, but at this point it is complete. Plenty of space inside to grow into as well. This is my first real piece of furniture and I learned a lot. Looking forward to the next project.

First I need to hit the sewing machine to make some tool rolls

DIY furniture wax (thelemmy.club)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Assian_Candor@hexbear.net to c/hobby@hexbear.net

I love the feel of wax on furniture and have been using Johnson's paste wax for years. The big problem with paste wax is it smells fucking awful, like opening a gas can. This is no surprise since it is made from petroleum.

After my venture into milk paint I decided to see what else I might be able to do to detox my finishing options. Making my own wax seemed like a good place to start.

After a little bit of research I found a few recipes, almost all of which were the same-- one part beeswax and four parts oil, by volume. I used beeswax pellets which can be found at craft stores or online, though you could use blocks or even refine your own from comb surplus if you happen to know a beekeeper. Just cut it up so it melts easier. For the oil, typically you will see folks use linseed oil for this, which is hard to find, unless it's flax in which case it's super expensive.

I went to my local crunchy food store to try to find some flax oil and was shocked to find it's like 40 bucks a quart-- so instead settled on a $12 bottle of culinary hemp oil.

Most recipes call for heating the oil and wax together in a double boiler, then pouring it into the final containers. This is unnecessary and makes a mess-- pick a nice wide mouth glass jar to hold your finished product, then put the oil and wax in the jar and put the whole thing in the microwave. After a couple of minutes the oil will heat up enough to melt the wax, and when it's completely melted give it a stir and throw a lid on it-- boom you're done. No mess.

After it's hardened it can be used like normal paste wax. And folks let me tell you-- the hemp blend smells amazing. Don't be put off by the light green color-- it doesn't transfer at all.

It is a joy to use and the beeswax leaves a superior finish to the petroleum waxes, it's very grippy and smooth in the hand. I also love that I can eat it with no ill effects. The paste wax feels like it has to be aired out overnight just to let the smell dissipate.

You can also add pigment to it-- I added black iron oxide to a small jar and used it on all of my hand planes. Here is a before and after on my cheap scrub plane:

The black wax works it's way into the pores in the grain, creating a patina. I have also tried this with brown iron oxide and the effect is similar though it leaves a warmer and less muted finish. You can also add the same pigment that's in the milk paint of your choice, and get a really nice effect with the colors popping.

I am using the black wax on my tool chest-- more to come on that here very shortly

I'd planned on putting a bow there but the Kuromi skull inside the gear was too good. I'm kind of frustrated by how much I like it. The spreading of divine knowledge will henceforth be known as Kuromification
