Another season, more slop to ignore and a couple of shows to watch.

Manga:

Shibuya Near Family continues being good - it's the only ongoing manga I look forward to and seek out. Koji Kumeta's found his style a long time ago: social commentary + a hint of absurdism. Be it 1999 or 2025, it works well. A

Ariadne in the Blue Sky by Norihiro Yagi (known for Angel Densetsu & Claymore) is a real throwback in storytelling style. An old school fantasy adventure with sci-fi elements that does not care for RPG elements, immediate worldbuilding dumps or isekais. However, it is not as interesting as Claymore and definitely not as amusing as Angel Densetsu. Thus far at least. B- so far

I've also been reading the Evangelion manga and the fun but very slow to update Lies of the Sheriff Evans: Dead or Love - both good.

Anime:

The Twelve Kingdoms and Vision of Escaflowne are two shows that are very similar to each other in the beginning of the show, and I'm too early into them to judge, so I'll leave it at "I like them"

Tokimeki Tonight is a 80s shojo romcom with vampires that doesn't take itself too seriously and has delightful stylized backgrounds. I've only just started it, but it's fun so far.

Ranma 1/2, the 80s version. Having read some of the manga in the past, but dropping it because I lost track of what chapter I was on, the show is just as fun as I remember it being - and features the legendary VA Megumi Hayashibara. A

Dragon Ball Z - If I had 1 € for every legendary 150+ episode show from the Spring 1989 season I'm watching, and is actually holding up to the reputation it has... I'd have 2 €. A- (because it hasn't reached the peak of the original Dragon Ball imo... yet)

Katte ni Kaizou - Re-watched this adaptation of Koji Kumeta's early 2000s manga, and actually read what is available of it. It's fun... definitely a Shaft Adaptation for good and bad, and it's interesting to see the transition from the haha penis humor of the early part of the manga, into the more SZS style stuff later on. Shame it's a fairly short OVA for such a long and quality work, to the point where I feel like it kinda misrepresents the manga somewhat. B+

Western Animation:

Gravity Falls: I just started this, and is it just me, or does this show remind anyone of Spongebob in its humor? Either way, I like it so far.

Hooboy another build-up episode- first half is the remaining 0079 era bits from the movie with Char trying to kill Kycilia with a big asteroid provided by the Federation (the more things change, the more things stay the same it seems). There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it freeze frame of Lalah stopping Char from shooting Sayla in Newtype space just before the Axis Shock/Zeknova happens that I didn't catch in the movie, but it's here in the show.

Overall I'd say this entire sequence felt better with the movies chronology, since it set up the big mystery of this timeline (what happened to Char?) and highlighted the danger of the Zeknova. I guess this was as good a place as any to put this tho, because we really couldn't continue the back half here without this context.

I'm not going to get too deep into the back half- a lot happens here. (And a distracting amount of Eva references.) But I do want to highlight a smaller character scene/detail that's only possible because we're playing in a franchise with 46 years of material-

Nyaan is a refugee from Side 2. Side 2 was the colony that Zeon gassed and then dropped on the Earth, the event that kicks off the One Year War.

That dinner scene between her and Kycillia would be like if George Bush gave a home cooked meal to an Iraqi kid, promising asylum and college entry if they just signed up for the US Military to test their latest weapon systems.

The entire back half, Nyaan has a deep-seated sadness within her, almost like her soul is being weighed down by gravity.

Oh shit is that my favourite Gulp Shitto, Quattro Bajeena!?

(Have some Kycillia Obaa-chan cute fanart.)

You can check those posts for discussions and glosses of other anime, which might help you decipher these. Like the previous two parts, the plot descriptions here are based on those from Anilist, so consider using that site for reference; you can also use things like title structure, character names, and occasional numerals to help you figure things out.

Last time, only one of the three anime were deciphered, so I will reprint the two unsolved ones with glosses of the "solved words" now.

Unsolved from the previous post

A few hints

Deciphering character namesThe lengths of names may be of use but don't expect them to perfectly match their lengths in Hepburn/English. Likewise initials might not always match the Hepburn.

Names are inflected with a masculine suffix -a and a feminine suffix -e, but to prevent hiatus these go through the following sound changes:

① {a(ː).V → Vː|V = any vowel} — as in *Sakura-eSakuré

② {O(ː).V → ø(ː)|O = round vowel} — as in *Tomoyo-eTomoyǒ, or *Kló-aKlő

③ {E(ː).V → jV(ː)|E = unrounded front vowel} — as in *Miyuki-aMiyukya

The sound change for front vowels may trigger further sound changes:

{Tj → TT|T = alveolar consonant} — but note that alveolar geminates are realized as palatals

ji(ː) → iː

In that order.

Note however that proper nouns occasionally do not refer to characters, in which case the gender the name is inflected as may not be of much use to you.

Other revelations about the grammar and word derivationIt has by this point been cracked or revealed that...

  1. -t́ forms verbs and -ćk forms active participles.
  2. to is a preposition, but its exact meaning has not yet been revealed.
  3. -v is a suffix used to form the construct state. This means that the following word modifies or possesses the previous.
  4. The root ruň means "head"; it is the root in yeTruňeyne and sokruňeynevńe.

With that out of the way, let's get into the new titles to translate! Please spoiler your guesses.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are beginning the classic Gainax series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), covering episodes 7 through 12. Join a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes on a steampunk adventure to find and save the lost city of Atlantis from an diabolical organization determined to rule the world. Stargate (1994) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) pretty much ripped this series off. Oh yeah, and did I mention that Hayao Miyazaki wrote it, and Hideaki Anno was involved, too?

After that is James and the Giant Peach (1996), a stop-motion animated adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name, from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and Coraline (2009) director Henry Selic. A young orphan boy escapes his wicked aunts by going on a voyage to New York inside a giant peach filled with giant sentient bugs. Pretty awesome aesthetic in this one, so let’s check it out.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

After that is Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops: The New Age (2011), one of over 40 Doraemon theatrical features, and, according to many people, the best one of them all. Elementary-school student Nobita and his robotic-plushie buddy, Doraemon, find the pieces of a giant mecha and assemble them into a super-robot. Uh-oh, turns out it’s a doomsday weapon sent by an army of evil mechanical aliens who are coming to conquer Earth. Great reviews for this one, so let’s check it out. We have never watched anything Doraemon-related, and the series’ continuity is minimal, so we can just jump in here. Director Yukiyo Teramoto also worked on Monster (2003) and a bunch of other Doraemon movies.
