Care to elaborate?

It might be more complicated than I understand it to make it sound good, but compared to a CD player setup it is simpler.

I think my point still stands :)

[-] hanke@feddit.nu 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah what I meant in my comment was that vinyl is so simple I can understand the full system from the record to the music reaching my ears.

Given enough time and resources I think I could build a really crap turntable + amp + speakers myself and explain every step of the way.

A CD player uses lasers, processors, DACs and a lot more that are way over my understanding.

The point being, low tech is nice. Keep it simple 😄

CDs are making a comeback already!

Albeit not as big as vinyl yet, but it might catch up given time!

A couple of months ago I overheard a couple guys in their early 20s who were happy for finding some specific CD in a local record store.

I don't agree with you that being hipster is the only good reason for it.

There are many benefits with physical and DRM-free media.

I just posted another comment on this post making my point though 😄

Yeah, I think you're right when it comes to quality alone. Especially with that last text.

To me, vinyl has the following qualities that I like:

  • I own it physically, no streaming service can revoke my records against my will
  • It just works
  • No funky formats, DRM or special technical requirements
  • The ritual of putting on a record
  • Listening becomes more intentional (putting on a good album vs your random 1000+ track "everything"-playlist)

I can probably come up with more reasons. These are not all unique to vinyl.

There are lots of downsides as well, like price, conveniance, dust, no streaming on the go and so on.

I still like my records though.

Not sure if I agree with you or not. I think technically you are right. But there is a lot more to it than pure quality and conveniance.

What?

If there are many instances of peoples rights being violated, what makes you think your rights will be respected when push comes to shove?

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

We've just got our first house and with it came a lot of new challenges in the shape of gardening.

One issue I have not managed to solve is weeds in our lawn.

I have been ripping these things out of the lawn a lot (see pic in post) but I feel like I can't win. There are big patches where you can hardly see the grass.

I know not everyone want the perfect grassy lawn, and I don't need perfection. But these things are growing and spreading at an alarming rate. I need to do something about them.

Where we are at now, I feel like we are past the point of ripping them up one by one. We need some wider, more effective solution.

What are these and how do I fight them in scale?

You're supposed to defend the ball by using your athleticism to fend off your opponents, not by using medieval battlefield tactics to force a siege.

Games evolve over time. Get with it or get behind.

Just found this album and I really like it.

It is electronic funk with a lot of talkbox and good stuff.

I especially recommend listening to the track "Fnktrp".

I bought an old Pioneer turntable to get started playing records.

Now I wonder, what type of cartridge is this? And can I upgrade it? Or do I just get a new cartridge?

How can I tell if the stylus is in good shape or not?

I appreciate any answers.

To be clear; I just want to learn and understand more and also understand my options going forward :)

  1. You can't have unbiased AI without unbiased training data.
  2. You can't have unbiased training data without unbiased humans.
  3. unbiased humans don't exist.

If I am not mistaken, there is a "don't show me this offer again" thingy somewhere.

But as others have mentioned, it is a free service. And most importantly, this free service does not collect your data or show targrted ads to make a profit off of you when you don't pay. It is truly free. I think being asked to pay for the service is extra okay because of this.

Situations like these are the strength of the fediverse. Move your account to an instance that shares your values or doesn't care about stuff like this.

Maybe you shouldn't even have had your account on the largest server to begin with?

Edit: Didn't mean to ridicule any of you all. I based my comment on my experience when I signed up. At that time there were plenty of instances to pick from and getting approved at my instance of choice was very quick. My bad.
