Please don‘t extrapolate from the US healthcare system to insurances in general. Insurances collect money from many so in the case something happens to an individual that individual doesn‘t need take the full financial loss. This makes a lot of sense, because it would very inefficient if everyone would save money in order to pay for a potential cancer treatment. Cancer is rare, but in aggregate it is just small amount each month.

The job of the insurance is to define that monthly amount (which is not trivial to do), collect it, store it and eventually pay it out.

On another note, unless an insurance is mandatory you can usually opt to pay yourself.

This is so wrong. I don‘t know where you live, but at least in Germany tap water is not free. Of course everyone drinks roughly the same amount of water, but most water is consumed in other ways where it totally matters to price it. For example taking a bath consumes much more water than showering. People have private pools where one fill-up can easily double the water consumption of a year.

The water pricing is actually progressive so the more you consume the more you have to pay per amount. This allows cheap prices for the average consumer and discourages to overconsume.

Water is precious and shouldn‘t be treated as an abundance.

They have not. I can‘t provide you the link, but it was long speculated that they are working on an ARM device. Also you cannot really hide activity in an open source project. It was just not officially communicated that these changes have been funded by Valve.

"Reiche gegen höhere Erbschaftssteuer" translates to "[Katharina] Reiche against higher inheritance tax". However the word "reiche" also means "rich", so out of context one could read it is "Rich against inheritance tax". Someone must have spotted this before posting this as a headline: https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/erbschaftssteuer-reiche-100.html

This is the minister: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherina_Reiche

English (deepl): Comments made by Union faction leader Spahn sparked a debate within the government about inheritance tax. Now, Economics Minister Reiche has spoken out clearly against an increase. She calls higher taxes ‘poison’.

That‘s how it is in Germany. You can only get laid off without a negotiated severance package, when the employer is in financial trouble. Even then you need start laying people off the employer needs to do it according to the social contract (e.g. single mothers last). Both is really hard to proof (in court) so usually everyone gets a severance package anyway. This means when you hear about big layoffs in Germany usually all of them get a severance package or agree to something else. These layoffs are not comparable to the USA. This is the shortened and positive descriptions of the process, but of course there are also (justifiable) downsides of doing it this way.

Thats false! There is already a link to the wikipedia article, but here is the relevant quote: „but uses hardware restrictions or digital rights management (DRM) to prevent users from running modified versions of the software on that hardware.“

It is not a violation of the GPL 2, the license of the Linux kernel, but only the GPL 3 which was basically created for this case. Linus Torvalds is a big defender of the GPL 2 and said that Tivo provided good patches for the hardware they used.

I didnt even think about it, but looking it up „a European“ is correct. It‘s not about the letter, but the sound.

I once taught private lessons in math on calculating the area of a circle and I wanted to show the students how much cheaper per area a larger pizza is. So we of course got the diameters of pizzas from their favorite restaurant and started calculating. Then we found out that the normal sized pizza was actually the cheapest per area. It wasn‘t quite what we expected, but a very good math lesson for the attendees nonetheless: The owner lost money, because they were bad at maths.

This is the wrong statistic! It doesnt matter how often you take the train, but how far you go. There is something called a passenger kilometer. Someone traveling one kilometer by train makes one passenger kilometer, 6 people on a train going 10 kilometers makes 60 passenger kilometers. The same can be done for other modes of transportation. The modal split (the right statistic) then shows how much each mode of transportation is actually used. Here you can find the statistic for each country of the EU: https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/daviz/passenger-transport-modal-split-2#tab-chart_1

A few examples why modal split is better than frequencies:

  • Environmentally CO2 is emitted per kilometer. Someone may bike a short distance everyday to work, but visits his parents who live far away every weekend by car.
  • On the way to work someone could take the car and the train on the same commute.
