"Skin heads against racial prejudice" in this context I'm fairly sure

But aren't skinheads just nazis? Sorry if this is an obtuse question but I've always seen the term used interchangeably.

skinhead is punk subculture, but because of the word "skin" and the tendency of nazis to shave their heads and adopt punk culture aesthetics, the two began to be used interchangeably. So for a long time now there have been anti-fascist punks who aesthetically look like skinheads but will beat up an actual nazi if they see one. At least that's how I've had this explained to me. I've never been particularly immersed in that subculture.

That's not really correct. The first iteration of skinheads in Britain, late 60s, were a subculture with mod (white rockers) and rude boy (Jamaican immigrants) influences. Colloquially, reggae in the late 60s was referred to as skinhead reggae because skinheads were the biggest consumers of Jamaican music outside of the Caribbean. From an ideological standpoint, they were all over the place (benevolent toward blacks, with some 2nd gen Jamaicans in their ranks, but often hostile toward Pakistani immigration) but certainly not nazi or white power affiliated.

The National Front in the 70s started co-opting skinheads as they saw the disaffected youth as a means to rise in power. This is the birth of the nazi skinhead movement as we know it (aped later in America by shitheads like Tom Metzger in Fallbrook, CA), which coincided with racist bands gaining popularity like Skrewdriver or Combat 84.

However, most oi and street punk was antithetical to the National Front world view. In response, many prominent skinheads who were either apolitical to far Left (including Roddy Moreno of The Oppressed) started SHARP in response to the rise of skins identifying with National Front.

So that's the basic history.

this

the reason punk is bifurcated into antifascists and fascists is because it was a music subculture first, and only became a site of political contest later.

Skinhead is used to mean essentially "Nazi gangster with a shaved head" in popular parlance, but it has many different meanings that are older than that one.

Breadtube if it didn't suck.

Post videos you genuinely enjoy and want to share, duh. Celebrate the diversity of interests shared by chapochatters by posting a deep dive into Venetian kelp farming, I dunno. Also media criticism, bite-sized versions of left-wing theory, all the stuff you expected. But I am curious about that kelp farming thing now that you mentioned it.

Low effort / spam videos might be removed, especially weeb content.

There is a cytube that you can paste videos into and watch with whoever happens to be around. It's open submission unless there's something important to commandeer it with at the time.

A weekly watch party happens every Saturday (Sunday down under), with video nominations Saturday-Monday, voting Monday-Thursday. See the pin for whatever stage it's currently in.
