It is easy to forget the indirect causes of him becoming president (twice), such as a failing opposition and the two-party system, corruption (as in large companies can buy policies), biased media, ever increasing polarisation, an economic system that puts the interest of the haves against the interests of the have-nots. I think most people here understand the situation in the US is not that of one evil mastermind who bedazzled everyone, but sometimes I do get the feeling people choose to take the easy way and consider his voting based stupid, self-centered or naive without consideration for the external circumstances. Not saying the voters aren't to blame, but there is a lot more at play than a little bit of propaganda by the Republican Party.

I'm more referring to the ones who use the excuse "they didn't know he was like this".

It's almost that if you take them at their word, rather than them being a fool for believing such things, that you are in-fact the fool who believes their ridiculous explanation for why they aren't a bad person.
