Imagine caring if someone texts you back immediately. Real maturity is recognizing that most adults have other things going on and can't/won't be glued to their phone all day long.

I read the meaning as someone thinking it weird to text back immediately. That was the offense. As if you should play it cool and wait to respond.

I personally respond quickly if I'm holding my phone and the message comes in, usually.

I make sure to age my replies. If someone's not dying, give that shit a full 24 hours.

Them, 13 Aug: Morning!

You, 14 Aug: Morning! How are you?
Them, 14 Aug: great since I get to talk to you 🙂. How are you?

You, 15 Aug: Great for the same reason 🙂. Want to have dinner?
Them, 15 Aug: love to, where and when?
Them, 15 Aug: Where are we having dinner?
Them, 15 Aug: missed 7 calls from Them.
Them 15 Aug: I'm hungry, are you ok?
Them, 15 Aug: I hope you're ok, call me when you see this, no matter the time, I just need to know you're ok

You, 16 Aug: Morning, sorry, 24 hour rule. Dinner tonight?

sorry, 24 hour rule. Dinner tonight?

lmao that’s hilarious

Just enough time to sous vide the roast

You and them can refer to just you and one other. English pronouns get weird.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 2 points 15 hours ago

Some days they get multiple replies, as a treat!

[-] Alenalda@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago

That's dexter so it reads to me like anyone responding instantly is a serial killer.

[-] protist@retrofed.com 1 points 10 hours ago

I thought that was David Fisher

[-] Donkter@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Also, I'm happy to text asap if we're planning something. If you're shooting me texts to small talk, I'm happy to chat, but you have to understand that I'll probably only start chatting when I'm really free if it's not important.

[-] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 3 points 16 hours ago

You’ve got it backwards. Read the post again.

[-] blunderworld@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

My comment mostly has to do with the 'mature' part, implying that the mature thing to do is to text someone back immediately. And conversely, not texting back immediately is immature.

That said, reading comprehension is not always my strong suit, so fair play. Me brain no work so good.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah but like instantly instantly is weird. You kind of expect there to be a period where they free their hands, then check the message, then weigh up whether it warrants a conversation right now, then think what to say, then type it. Could take 30 seconds, could take 3 hours if they're fully busy and you get sidelined.

A reaponse in 2 seconds from cold open always sets me off balance.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 16 hours ago

You're thinking too much. Instant responses are not weird. Am I supposed to just wait for a bit so that youre wheels don't start turning in the most un charitable direction.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 1 points 15 hours ago

Nobody owes anybody anything man do what you want. Its still weird though. Like when you knock a door and they answer it immediately because they were stood right there. You dont expect it.

[-] Sanguine@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 14 hours ago

I agree that would be weird. Difference is a person is holding their phone throughout the day. Its not a good comparison cause the behavior of standing by the front door waiting for it to knock is unusual behavior.

[-] technohacker@programming.dev 1 points 15 hours ago

I mean, personally it's because I don't get a lot of messages in the first place, and most of the time I'm just lost in my thoughts and not actively busy so it's a nice change of pace. Now, even I'll admit 2 seconds is a little short, but I'm often ready with a response within 10
