I agree! I was having so much more fun on Pandora with Varaang. I was thinking after the beginning we were gonna settle in to some sort of compelling loop of "oh, this is gonna be the new interpretation and I'm going have a perspective I never considered". Instrad it's like another remaster for the world's most ancient IP.
Eliot Page stood out to me as one of the most interesting actors. In my own writing I am a sucker for magical reagents that sort of imply their function. So when Odysseus has to sacrifice animals to talk to the dead and then the dead drink the blood that's my jam. Then he's all "you lied to me!" and then still has to be reasoned with despite being dead that's the good stuff for me. If Odysseus sacrificed less blood he'd get less out of the dead and that's neat.
All the actors are so famous that they cease to feel like actual characters. It seems a bit like the studio was famous people daycare. Zendaya is simply Zendaya.
It is incomprehensible to me that it got such a high audience score. It's not fun nor is it psychological.
It got me to relisten to EPIC: The Musical. Only to realize Get In the Water was about Poesidon and not the siren song (because a woman did a cover of the song and tiktokers dressed up like the sirens). Treating the sirens like an Eldritch horror despite nothing else getting that treatment and everything else getting the full breadth of violence felt lazy. I should get to imagine what it's like to get seduced into the water. That's what made the Get In the Water song cover so interesting in my mind. It wasn't because the dudes were horny, it was "if you don't, everything you love will die. Come. You have lived long enough." Star Trek just did an episode of psych horror that did a cool look at someone unwittingly becoming violent. If they can do it then it can't be that hard.
