!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.
The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

MODERATORS
It's mostly rural vs urban. Not uncommon to hear red small town people, who have never visited the blue population center of their state call it a crime ridden tax drain (lol) and vocally support secession.
It’s weird because I have a vague impression that in prior centuries, urbanites actively shunned and mocked rural folks aka “country bumpkins” and such. But these days it’s very much the other eay around. Rural folks are terrified of the city and city people don’t think about rural folks at all.
Meanwhile their towns are full of drugs and family annihilations.
I truly believe the rural population here has it 100% backwards regarding whether urban or rural areas are safer.
Go watch some bodycam footage. The wildest shit is all rural red state stuff. It is bad out there and they believe (very wrongly) that it's worse in the cities.

My mom said she would never raise a kid in a small town because there is nothing to do except get in trouble. All her cousins either went to jail or got pregnant young, she figured a city has opportunities, summer jobs, libraries, rec centers, things to keep kids occupied and out of trouble.

You make a good point. I remember when I was about to start school, my parents moved us to a rural area because they felt it was safer for raising children. The house we moved into was two doors down from a meth lab on one side and a pedo on the other. That was in the '80s.
I wouldn't call Washington "rural"...
Depends on where you are. There's scary rural areas, it's not all Seattle
Of course, crime’s always going to happen when you take away resources and intentionally impoverish the citizens. But it gets even worse when the cops use a gun to solve every problem they come across.
That’s my Dad. Hasn’t been to a big city in 20 years minimum. Still convinced Chicago/LA/New York etc are violent third world cesspools.
I never expected this, but it's happened many times:
I live in a small town and my daughter just graduated from college in Detroit. When I tell people where she went to school, many of them are like "OMG REALLY?" "Weren't you scared for her?"
I just tell them "Not at all! It's a really nice city, and she's thinking of moving back out there!"
Which is true, and it blows their fucking minds.

No, but there's a few around here under 100k
Those tend to owe a lot of back taxes and need significant renovations
Are we talking, like, a few thousand dollars? That's still cheaper than big.city rent for a year
