Japan gets such a pass from people because they created anime, manga, Pokemon, and tons of other iconic cultural things. The darker side is the ultranationalist imperialist bit where they won't admit their crimes against humanity during WW2. The stories from Nanking are some of the most horrific things you could read about. Some of it makes Waffen-SS crimes sound mild in comparison.
I remember listening about Unit 731 (CW: Some of the most graphic, gruesome, torturous experiments in history, NSFL)
It was so hard to listen to. Every time I hear Japan threaten to recolonize China, it makes my blood boil to no end.
Is so fascinating how barely no one knows shit about Unit 731, even in manga/anime they never reference this. Nazi imagery and treating them as villains do happen but I can only remember 2 times that Unit 731 receive this treatment. One is some novel from Bleach and the other one I can't point exactly, I think is Jujutsu but I could be wrong, but is some modern shounen/seinen.
Yeah I've heard of that too. Hard to put into words the levels of evil.
I feel the same about Japan. China got bullied right from the first point of contact with Europeans right through to the end of WW2. They even have the term "century of humiliation" to describe the worst period of it. But nobody is able to bully them anymore, and that has been the case ever since the founding of the PRC in 1949.
The Chinese people can now defend themselves from imperialist aggression, and Japan would do well not to try anything, because they no longer have a controlling stake in China's future.
Ishii's research data and if I recall correctly his own personal consultation was used by the US in their germ warfare against Korea as well. This is one of those things I looked super deep into in high school and it is fucking twisted awful shit.
Like "experiments" done during the Holocaust, the data ended up being worthless because it was just an excuse to torture people. Yeah, no shit, people experience pain when you freeze their limbs and shatter them. The experiments were poorly conducted, such as no control groups or methodology with missing steps.
About the only useful thing was the effects of chemical and biological weapons. And again, it was mostly useless because it was like "Yeah, people die if they're exposed to weaponized anthrax."
Distribution methods were the main intel. Dropping aide covered in infected fleas etc. It was less about that diseases kill people but how yo introduce it to people efficiently. The rest was useless cruelty. Some was useful at creating more widespread cruelty later.
Edit: i'm saving this for noise lyrics
For a social studies class in high school we got paired up to do group assignments where we had to do a PowerPoint about a country and talk about 3 different things. We got Japan and went with Unit 731, Yukio Mishima and Aum Shinrikyo. We had decided ahead of time, no matter the country we'd find the darkest shit we could. Japan was like...the best random pick we could have gotten. I think all the countries in the hat were western allies
It also probably helps that they can't use Japan's crimes to launder Zionism, if they weren't trying to build support for Zionism, I doubt the crimes of Germany would be as heavily emphasized as they are. Growing up I was sold Israel as the sanctuary for us if another Shoah happened
The pass exists only because Japan is an American client state; the butchers of Nanking and other monsters who staffed the imperial machine were pardoned and reintegrated by the American occupation regime and turned into a mercenary and advisor corps for the capitalist regimes of Korea and Taiwan
Examination into Japanese war crimes is treated with kids' gloves because eventually that investigation runs into the post-war period, where American collaboration with the fascists was the name of the game
All the genociders got off scot-free and were sipping champagne with US capitalists and intelligence agents for decades after the war
anime, manga and pokemon are a lot darker than you imply here, with extreme issues in both their production and treatment of workers - as well as their content including SA, pedophilia and other disturbing trends at extremely high rates even in mainstream and popular products. One might even make the case that this is the unique appeal of anime that has so enraptured the west.
Not going to argue with that. There are of course issues with those things too.
why, some of us do make that argument, and have noticed similarities in our recent love of korean media. there were a few years there in the 2000s that made it look like problematic indian media was going to take up the mantle, so that probably deserves a special mention, even if korea eventually eclipsed them.
