For this week's Mega I will be sharing one of my all time favorite fighter planes: the MiG-23. This was the last single engine fighter of the USSR I believe. I will add some information about it each day.

Day 1: OriginsThe MiG-23 had the unenviable task of replacing the MiG-21. The MiG-21 was fast, maneuverable, it the most produced supersonic fighter jet of all time, and had an impressive service record with the Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) against the US air force. However it would need to be replaced eventually. It was a fairly small and short range fighter, and the nose intake limited the size of the radar that could be installed. It soon became clear that a new design would be needed to effectively take advantage of the new technology and manufacturing capabilities that the USSR had developed.

The MiG-23 was designed from the beginning to carry brand new technologies, even some that would not be available when the initial variants of the MiG-23 were produced. It would ultimately carry a larger and more power radar with look-down shoot-down capabilities, along with the first medium range air to air radar guided missile of the USSR: the Vympel R-23. It also featured a swing wing, allowing it to change the wing geometry in flight to suit supersonic speed and acceleration with the wings folded back, or low speed maneuverability and take off and landing performing with the wings all the way forward, or anywhere in between. A high degree of automation for the time allowed the pilot to focus on combat. One of the coolest features in my opinion though was the integration of an IR search and track system (IRST) which would allow the pilot to find and lock onto airplanes without ever turning on the radar, preventing the enemy from detecting that they're being targeted. The MiG-23 could even launch missiles from beyond visual range (barely) without ever turning its radar on, or only briefly to verify that the plane it was locking was an enemy, using the combination of the IRST and the IR guided variant of the R-23: the R-23T.

    Just do it already

People who shouldn't be on hrt don't labor over if they should or shouldn't. Just try it for a little bit at least.

I wouldnt say its a burden... I can literally go months without thinking about it. Its just that sometimes I have moments where I consider transitioning but I usually shut those thoughts down. Even the fact that I entertained the idea for a moment of talking with my doctor about it is further than Ive gone in the last... let me think, 15 years? Yes I have known that im "technically" trans since 2010.

There exists an idea of myself as a woman, but that woman would age, and I dont think I could handle not being beautiful and perfect forever ...losing that one day. I couldnt live with losing that, so why pursue it in the first place?

Its probably self-internalized misogyny but can you really blame me? Im, at heart, a cis-het dudebro. I just happen to sometimes fancy the idea of being a banging broad.

EDIT Im open to have my mind changed.

Holy shit so we have like at least 3 reppers on this site?

There exists an idea of myself as a woman, but that woman would age, and I dont think I could handle not being beautiful and perfect forever

Has 15 years of this not aged you cri get the fuck on hrt already. Do you want to spend another 15 years waiting around, every now and again having this surface? Does aging as a man not make you even a little bit uncomfortable? Like you're still aging right?? Also, E will make you look younger and age better. idk how old you are now but I have people very regularly thinking I am much younger then I am since starting.

I felt the same way about myself for a bit there but am much more comfortable in my skin and who I am now.

I'm pretty sure I have some crypto laying around I will buy you diy right now. Or book your doctor's appointment.

I just happen to sometimes fancy the idea of being a banging broad.

thats being trans and you need estrogen. Literally just try it. You have like 3 months before anything starts changing permanently anyway. Even then its all mostly reversible.

In general I try to avoid thinking about “what would I tell my pre/early transition self” because it just makes me sad about things I can’t change. Despite that, the version of me I most wish I could get a message to is 6-12 months before starting hrt.

I felt so overwhelmed thinking about all of the positive and negative consequences that it took a long time to get myself to the point I felt like I was ready. With hindsight, I could explain to myself that I was ready a lot earlier than I thought I was.

The positive aspects were everything I wanted and more. Some of my worries were practical, and I’m glad I took those seriously, but they were much more solvable than I feared, and I could have figured something out even if they were more difficult than they turned out to be. I also worried that maybe I didn’t want it as much as I thought I did, which wasn’t remotely true, but even if it was, I could have stopped after a few months having learned something about myself and with basically no harm done.

Im, at heart, a cis-het dudebro

I have this image of myself sometimes, and at this point it’s pretty comedic to imagine him taking estrogen for some “ironic” reason he jokes about but can’t actually explain.

See you say you felt overwhelmed. Where as I will just legit go to not think about it for the next half year or something.

I don’t mean I felt overwhelmed for six months straight. I mean that I would occasionally consider it, quickly think “that’s too big of a deal for me to handle. I don’t really care that much anyway” and then bury the idea for a few weeks or months. Looking back, neither part was true, and even if I did care as little as I told myself, it still would have been worth it.

It sounds like you have a particular idea in mind of what it’s supposed to feel like to be a trans woman and how that’s separate from you. The range of experiences we have is broader than that though.

I can literally go months without thinking about it

so you’ve thought about it consistently every so often for years? i would at least try it. then you can say “oh shit i love this” or “nope not for me actually, i’m good on this”

estrogen makes your skin smooth btw. everyone ages, but is it aging you have an issue with or the hypothetical loss of beauty/femininity you think comes with age?

Im totally fine with aging as a man. Im NOT fine aging as a woman .

Getting HRT In the first place is certain to be a whole hassle ...so unless I really want it im unlikely to get it.

so that’s what i mean; you’re fine w the path of least resistance, but the idea of gaining and then losing something you value is much more worrying, understandably so.

also eggnog is literally offering to send it to your doorstep, easy as can be lol. in my experience the biggest hassle was when i chose to freeze my sperm which added another month of bs, but not an issue for you. even planned parenthood is pretty chill i’ve heard.

i saw you said you were black. even the femmeiest of femme black trans women have it rough so i would never blame you for picking the easier option. transition is the path of most resistance, you’re purposefully putting in a shitload of effort to look the way you want, to live a life you’re not just ok with, but happy and excited to experience. i’m about half a year and i’m starting to realize how many more years it’s going to take to get to that place, but it’s invigorating to know i’m taking the steps.

absolutely no pressure because it is super difficult, but when you come to this thread saying “for 15 years i’ve had a reoccurring thought about being a beautiful woman, but that’s never gonna work out so i’m chill being a cis man,” a lot of girls here see shades of themself in your thought processes

Im, at heart, a cis-het dudebro.

    Respectfully, this seems false.

Also remember, the effects of hrt take time to manifest. If you truly regret it you will have plenty of time to turn back. I have a sinking feeling that you won't regret it tho. And I think you also know this deep down. Change maybe scary, but nobody can avoid change. You just have to take control of it instead of being pushed around by life and your thoughts.

Change is the only inevitable constant, but the only change in life we truly have to accept is death.

When I call myself a dudebro, I mean that my behavior isn't feminine-coded at all. Im aware that there isn't just one "type" of woman, but at the same time, I dont think Id ever be able to be the kind of woman I see myself wanting to be, so why even bother?

Whereas, as a man, I dont have any lofty ambitions or grand desires. By comparison, Im content with my mediocrity.

My whole life, I have always taken the path of least resistance. I dont think that is going to change.

but the only change in life we truly have to accept is death.

You don't have to or not accept any change. Be that growing up, changing your job due to external/internal circumstances. Changing your tastes or anything else. The only thing you have to accept are the changes which you can take control over. You have to live with not just your actions but also your inactions.

I dont think Id ever be able to be the kind of woman I see myself wanting to be, so why even bother?

You should bother because you want to be that kind of woman. If you already accept "mediocrity" as a man then just become a mediocre woman. I know I worded that in a dismissive fashion, but not living up to your expectations doesn't mean that you shouldn't try. I face this insecurity myself in so many things, so I do empathise.

My whole life, I have always taken the path of least resistance

While that's fine and dandy, is "least rssistance" really the path which brings you repression and suffering and periodic questioning? That doesn't seem like least resistance to me. There's clearly some resistance if you're posting about it.

Do I want to be that kind of woman? Well I dont know. Being a black woman brings a whole lot of downsides with it. I see very few upsides beyond some nebulous “being your true self” thing. Being a black man is hard enough.

Like, if you asked me if I wanted to be a multibillionaire, I would say, Fuck yes. If you asked me to do what is needed to become one, I would immediately nope out. Thats my relationship with becoming a woman. I dont want to put in the work that is needed, and believe me, a LOT of work is needed. Were talking at least half a dozen surgeries and more

I dont want to be a trans woman. I want to be a perfect, radiant goddess. If I cant be that, Id rather be a smelly manchild. Basically, I would only want to be a woman under ideal circumstances. I have dated women I wouldn’t want to be.

I don’t think I suffer. Im not some tormented thing. I was just lacking sleep, and then my mind sometimes wanders in funny directions.

I don't know what to say. I'm sure you can figure it out. It's up to you anyways.

    Not comparable tbh but ok

I can only backup the others. Just give it a shot catgirl-smug and stop or pause if you're still not sure after little bit. Maybe think about the changes it will bring, talk to other people further along (like many of us here) and see what it did for them. Think about whether you want that. And trust your gut.
