Legalities aside, the NYPD will almost certainly not "just" do it. Getting the cops to arrest a sitting head of state that many are probably sympathetic to, in an action that would probably require getting in a gunfight with his security, is what's most challenging here.

I'm a little surprised at people in this thread implying a level of political leverage over the NYPD that he obviously doesn't have yet. Mamdani is clearly having to tip-toe around this semi-independent paramilitary operating in the city.

I was making a joke hence 'the critical support for police brutality' in there. As a serious statement, yeah, the NYPD is a legal gang that needs to be purged somehow.
