I enjoyed the movie but yeah I did kind of roll my eyes at him being super sad about his warriors doing warcrimes while doing nothing to control or punish his soldiers.
Also dry firing a bow to make it go "twang" like he kept doing will break your bow. That's my nerd complaing though. Movie was still pretty fun.
That reminds me of a post I saw on social media about a chud historian criticizing the movie for being "too modern" because the characters weren't emotionless enough. Real men don't get sad about the war crimes they're committing.
I've read the actual 3000 year old poem (well, an english translation) there are parts where a guy that is shown as a respecible and manly man weeps for his fallen comrades and it's treated as valid.
It's weird that chuds would focus on that aspect being too modern, because there is plenty of poorly aged misogyny other reactionary elements in the original that they could have got mad about not being included.
It's not as if the movie is that woke anyway, it's still a romantic depiction of imperial western culture, just like the original. I like it as a fantasy story and as an interesting piece of writing history (as it is one of the oldest surviving written fictional stories, I think?) But I still keep in the back of my mind that ancient Greece kinda sucked.
I read this as "a guy that is shown as a receptacle" at first and thought, "Did you have to phrase it like that?"

It's not that I think Odysseus should be emotionless, just that a version of Odysseus who gets a happy ending can't be one who cares about his victims or has an extremely Christian, post-Roman concept of honor. Odysseus can't live happily ever after if he's not a piece of shit, but in this movie he gets to be both a righteous person and a war criminal with the moral consequences of that handwaved at the end.
Oh yeah, I agree. It was more of a reply to Dort_Owl, because I thought it was funny and very on brand for chuds to complain about the emotional aspect instead of the morality. They get to watch a story in which war crimes have no consequences, and they're still upset.
They want the war crimes to have no consequences in a unexamined gritty action movie way.
