Has more bloatware than samsung and more spyware than facebook. Not the person you talked with first, but I also have a xiaomi and it's borderline unusable if you don't use adb to uninstall some of the ad shit. They throw ads on gallery, video player, music player, wallpaper, calculator, file browse.

Did you get one of the really cheap ones? I have heard they are cheap for a reason (e.g. they get the money from elsewhere, AKA selling you).

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 9 hours ago

I wish that was a problem exclusive to the cheaper phones or even xiaomi. I've had a Samsung Galaxy S20, it came with so much fucking bullshit apps. My gf and her sister both have a mid-high xiaomi (dunno about the specific model), ads are every-fucking-where.

sounds pretty bad, is it compatible with android apps?

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago

it's android, so it's fully compatible

[-] Footer1998@crazypeople.online 1 points 10 hours ago

ah i see, does it not integrate with google play services by default or something?

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 10 hours ago

It does, the international version comes with google play and the store and everything, it's a typical android phone like what you get from motorola or samsung, with a custom UI and lots of bloatware

[-] Footer1998@crazypeople.online 1 points 9 hours ago

oh, okay, thanks - wonder why that other guy acted like it was some kind of gotcha when he replied

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Probably a "Notes" xiaomi (or cheaper even), cheap and with publicity. I have the "flagship killer" (whatever that means) and there is 1 publicity in the file manager. I use FX so I don't care personally.

If you tinker a minimum (like installing an app) it's extremely well worth the money compared to samsung or worse, apple. IMO.

i dont think we are talking about like, phone performance so much as the level of evil associated with the corporation provided by the platform, i use grapheneOS which is degoogled android because google is super evil, and apple is evil too, but they're a minor evil by comparison to google

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Don't you have to buy a phone from google to use graphene though?

[-] Footer1998@crazypeople.online 2 points 9 hours ago

you need a pixel for the time being, but that'll be changing soon. i got a second hand pixel that was two versions older than the latest to mitigate that as much as possible

Octo core, 8GB ram (+8GB "virtual" whatever that means), 1TB storage, Leica optics and a mind blowing 120watt charger (that I rarely use, but when I do... Hold your hat!).

It's just a very good phone IMO, no bling, but also no specific downside. Maybe the one thing is a not vert good file manager, but I use FX so I don't really relate.

[-] Footer1998@crazypeople.online 1 points 9 hours ago

the other xiaomi user pointed out that its basically just android, with google play services and all, so you're just any other android user pretty much, right?

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Correct.

Would love to have a bare Linux on it for sure though. I'd use it as my main PC lol.

[-] Footer1998@crazypeople.online 1 points 9 hours ago

yeah, the reason i compared google and apple is because it's like the only two options available, as far as i know there aren't any linux phones which can actually work as phones, best we can do is degoogled android and very few people use it

Friend had the fairphone, without google (apparently you can choose with or without and she went full in), seemed to work okay with some small hiccups from time to time but nothing special.
