It can't do the literal entire thing an operating system is supposed to do: manage applications and their resulting windows, in a sensible way.

I want to know what application is running.

Sure it's in the dock!

I want to find a specific application window.

Go fuck yourself right to hell.

Wait, the taskbar doesn't show the running windows, like it does on every other OS? It's at least discrete right?

It discretely takes up 1.5cm of the bottom of the screen at all times. It's so discrete it doesn't even need to use the corners.

Uh, alright, well that's all the system space you need right?

Yeah of course just that bottom inch or so .... And a top of screen system level menu bar to display what windows does in the bottom corners.

/sigh/ ok, fine, I just want to be able to full screen a window and still see what else is open.

Burn in hell and die.

I want to be able to easily switch left and right between open windows.

Go full screen or I will shoot you.

I want to move an open window into the other monitor.

You can't because you're full screen dumbass.

I want to let a window present a popup like they normally do.

You can't because youre full screen dumbass. Why would you be full screen?

I want an application like Slack to be able to popup and remove notifications when is appropriate.

Choose to have every single notification persists on screen until you manually remove it, or miss all your notifications.

Can't we trouble you for something in between, where we trust an application and let it manage them in a way that makes sense based on their context?

You can trouble me for something in between these cheeks, shit stain.

Like honestly, I fucking hate what an advertising and AI filled mess Windows is, but it can actually manage your windows and virtual desktops in a way that makes a modicum of sense.

It feels like a single Apple product manager decided that the way that they use their computer (a single application at a time, no windows to manage) is the only way anyone does, so who cares if we implement a nonsensical full screen paradigm, it makes one tiny niche edge case slightly simpler.

I've recently went down the Mac OS rabbit hole how they can optimize hardware this well and get 24 hour battery on a single charge, it's not hardware optimization, it's controlling which software applications can be run on Mac OS.

the TDP between the M1 SOC and a x86_64 chip (intel, amd, etc). M1 uses about 30 W, my amd chip uses 15 W. The SOC of the M1 chip bundles everything together, this includes memory and storage the second and third wattage intensive components. So long as I keep my memory usage below the 15 W overhead I would technically surpass the m1 in the most ideal circumstance.

recently I installed the base install of arch Linux on that machine with mangoWM I've narrowed my memory usage to 580 MB on idle. I did some testing and after a 3 hour period between playing Minecraft at 22 chunks, low res, and working on verilog projects I still had 40℅ battery. Mind you, the battery has already depreciated to 88℅

apple users think they have the superior laptop, I think its just an expensive paperweight much like $1000 chromebook. you can't install any intensive application as in amd vivado/vitis and for good reason, it increases the amount of wattage used by the SOC.

I compare it to a Chromebook since you can effectively install any application on a chromebook as you would with Mac OS since chrome os's integration with Debian. If I wanted to, I could technically install vivado and MATLAB since Debian has official support for those applications.

as long as your on their OS, you will be confined to their applications and direct partnerships with companies to optimize that experience for Mac OS. They don't want a user to run (for example) vivado, which they know is unoptimized for their userbase. they want to give you the freedom to install applications but not too much freedom much like with windows and Linux. The reason why windows and Linux use that much more of your battery is because they allow you to run any software that's within their compatibility. Mac OS compatibility is "is the application optimized... no, come back when you've achieved that optimization"

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
