MODERATORS
To be fair, I don't know who she is either.
A two-hit wonder from 20 years ago
2 is generous. Paper Planes is the only one I know.
"Bad Girls" was an absolute banger.
thats a massive disservice to her influence
So are her opinions
while thats true we dont need to make ones as dumb as hers
You're right, she's definitely a one-hit wonder, and that song's only decent because of the Clash.
yeah this comment just makes you look like a fool. the hive mind is clouding reality, sad to see
🙄🙄🙄 If this could make my eye-rolls any bigger, they'd be eye-loaves. Sorry my opinion is different from yours, but it's just mine and it's just an opinion, no need to be sad. Especially over something so exceedingly subjective and unimportant.
it isnt an opinion at all, thats the issue. it is objective fact M.I.A. made at least 2 critcally acclaimed albums that critics, the public, and artists loved. no reason to start spreading false information just because M.I.A. is
I'm sorry I can't prove to you that I don't know any of that shit, but I simply don't. I've heard one song and she didn't even write the only part of that song that interests me. I actively listen to MIA the same amount I actively listen to Beyonce or Taylor Swift, which is to say not at all, but I can still list like a dozen tracks from each of them. If she was truly that objectively influential on all of society, why don't I know more of her work? And more importantly, why is she opening for Kid Cudi?
Now if you're Sri Lankan, I could see how that might affect your perceptions on this subject. I'm not and all I know is the one track that got really big where I'm from 🤷♂️. Again, sorry I guess.
Just saying, your view of reality is not the same as everyone else's, and it's never going to be.
you seem to see popularity as the only form of success or influence for a musician
You seem to see personal opinion as universal truth.
The only argument you've actually made is that two of her albums were popular, and now you're implying that's not a good measure of influence 🤦♂️🤷♂️
not what i said, i said they were critically acclaimed. i should have known trying to educate you on this would be pointless, too blinded by hate
Lemmy won't let me expand the conversation to reply to the appropriate comment, so I'll just put it here. Yes, Throbbing Gristle is influential to the industrial music movement. Does that make them universally influential? Of course not, most people haven't even heard of the genre, much less the artist. Likewise, MIA can be extremely influential within her genre without having much affect on the world at-large, and can still be accurately dubbed a one-hit wonder. In this whoooole thread I still haven't even heard what her other hits are, so the epithet certainly still applies for me. Wu Tang and the Kinks permeated culture so effectively that they're still popular all over, I don't even agree with the premise that they're unpopular. Like, if the Kinks could magically reunite and tour again, do you really think they'd be opening for washed-up mediocre rock acts?
xxxo, bad girls, galang, bucky done gun, and jimmy all reached the charts. i dont think you can call her a one hit wonder when 2 of her albums are great. skee lo is a one hit wonder. m.i.a. is not. and her influence does permeate culture as multiple artists who got big in the mid 2010s up to now cite her as a direct influence. her style of music has continued to get more and more popular. "brat" took over a whole summer not too long ago, and charli xcx cites m.i.a. as a major influence on her music. you can not like her music, you cannot downplay her importance, which is what you have done since the first comment
also, funny that there is actually a reply limit on lemmy, i never knew that
See, that's all I wanted, some data! Although I don't know any of those songs or what a skee lo is, I believe you, MIA is culturally significant. It's just too bad she's a fascist, now I'll never listen to any of it.
skee-lo made "i wish" which was a popular rap single in the early 90s
the album is actually not bad but he didnt really have anything other than "i wish" and for the black community one or two other songs that got playtime
edit: also, you dont have to listen to her, but youd be missing out on some important albums and her lyrics still ring true and hit hard, even if shes gone the opposite direction in her life (examples being 10 dollar, atention, illygirl, born free, all of the kala album, vicki leekx)
Critically acclaimed=liked by humans=popular Lack of exposure and interest≠hatred
so based off what you said, throbbing gristle would have had no influence over industrial music, because they aren't popular at all and other industrial acts are. the kinks arent too popular nowadays, im guessing they had no influence either right? wu tang clan hasnt had a hit since forever ago, guess they had no influence over rap music either.
you see what kind of uneducated mess youre saying?
dang Pineapple Express was 20 years ago?
2 hit wonder makes it sound like this is the most pathetic attention grab available ala kid redneck dipshit. No one gives a shit about the terrible music so they go for that sad smaller crowd that will go to smaller, sad festivals that give sad acts like this an opportunity.
Those two tracks are in frequent use in film and TV so she has far more money than sense and an outsized estimation of her genius.
That makes sense. She's still sad af in my estimation though
what was the second track? all I know is paper planes was featured heavily in Pineapple Express and that's it.
