Known pedophiles facing legal consequences is a very recent development in British politics.

Arguably, it's not even that, since the arrest is over him talking about confidential government stuff with Epstein, not for any of the abuse.

Also, he's only being thrown under the bus because no one likes him anyways. Easy way to get rid of the nuisance

Yeah. Remember like a decade ago when papers were released exposing a massive pedophile ring implicating most of parliament and they did nothing about it?

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 16 points 1 day ago

They're only throwing the dog a bone to keep it from eating the masters. Or deep fried cornmeal batter. Hush, puppy!

I mean, it also looks like Peter Mandelson's "best buddy" status with Epstein is gonna drag down the Starmer government... but more because at this point almost anything would drag that government down, not out of any principled attempt to address the pedophile cabal.

The only reason Starmer's not sacked yet is that whoever replaces him is definitely losing the next election.

It's so funny how instead of returning to their roots and implementing leftist policy, Labour just keeps doubling down on becoming tory-lite even though it's obvious that it'll cost them the elections for years to come.

Like,
"Oh my my, what ever can we do?"
"Urm, try actually being pro-labor for once?"
"Oh, heavens no, not that! Anything but that! Oh dear, oh my..."

It's an example of corporate regulatory capture, just like the US Democrats. Corbyn was the last gasp of actual Labour values, and they made sure that all possibility of that died with him. Labour will never again be a left-wing party, it's centre-right from here on out.

That's heinous.

A distraction is a distraction 🤷‍♀️

As an American, a bone would be lovely. One bone please, Mr President!

Sometimes the official charges are determined more by what's easiest to prove in court rather than what everyone knows is the most egregious of the crimes.

Court procedures aren't about public opinion, and it's easier to prove someone shared government secrets than it is to prove they did stuff that's so heinous that they obviously hid most of the real evidence. Like it or not, a couple of creepy emails ridden with thinly-veiled euphemisms isn't enough for the courts.

Edit: I'm not suggesting the British government particularly cares about the egregious crimes, just that this is sometimes why it seems like someone is charged for reasons that aren't quite the right ones...

Despite my being American, I listen to some British media, and I think it was James O'Brien who I heard wondering about Andrew. Basically, the royal family has "an heir and a spare." Charles the heir, and Andrew the spare.

The question really is, what if it was the heir who had been accused and not the spare? Actually, since Charles had his own heirs by then, Andrew wasn't really even the spare. He is completely disposable. But what if Andrew had been the heir? What if he had already become king and all of this came out? What would the UK do about it?

I think the suspicion is that the investigation would have gone nowhere and not have led to an arrest in that case. Neither the current king nor the heir would have been charged with raping children or leaking confidential material, whatever they did.

They're going after Andrew because he's a family embarrassment anyways, and because this scandal reflects badly on the royal family, so if they have him face justice, and they can hope that it makes their image look better, then that's what they'll do.

I think we should be having a look old Charlie boy, given he was big mates with a unique individual called Jimmy Savile.

There's almost like a Royal PR campaign framing this same talking point positioning themselves "better".

It's everywhere.
