So no one has any food and are all starving, but there is apparently ample amounts of food in the garbage, just getting thrown away?
I can't believe they would do something so cruel and inhumane. (I tried to find a news article about how the US pours bleach on mountains of thrown away food, but holy shit google is getting so dam unusable now.)
I think John Steinbeck wrote a good article about that
