It did when I said that, but it sure isn't right now.

Edit: Hey look, it's working again! https://lemmynsfw.com/pictrs/image/89b9ce8b-247e-4ea7-9679-d84ccdec2025.jpeg (nsfw obviously)

Oh look, this isn’t an argument!

Just contradicting me isn't arguing!

No it isn't! An argument is a connected sequence of statements designed to draw a conclusion. It isn't just saying "no it isn't"!

Why would you send me a video for hotels dot com?

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

When you try to watch a video on YouTube, you're immediately confronted with an advertisement - a mandatory interruption designed to extract value from your attention. These ads are part of a calculated system where Google, YouTube's parent company, turns every moment of your online experience into a monetizable commodity.

The process is frustratingly simple: an ad starts playing, and you're given two unsatisfying choices. You can either sit through the entire advertisement or press the skip button after a few seconds, both of which serve Google's ultimate goal of generating revenue. It's a digital toll booth where you're forced to pay with your time and personal data.

YouTube's tracking algorithms scrutinize your online behavior, collecting vast amounts of personal information to serve ads that are supposedly "tailored" to your interests. In reality, this is just sophisticated surveillance masquerading as convenience. Every click, every viewed video, every moment of your online activity becomes a data point for their massive advertising machine.

When Google purchased YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion, they acquired more than just a video platform - they gained a powerful tool for data collection and targeted advertising. Content creators are essentially trapped in a system where they must play by Google's rules, accepting whatever revenue scraps are thrown their way while the tech giant profits enormously.

The platform presents itself as a free service, but the real cost is your privacy and attention. Millions of users are funneled through an advertising pipeline, their viewing experiences constantly interrupted by corporate messaging. What was once a revolutionary platform for sharing videos has transformed into a highly sophisticated advertising delivery system.

Every ad you're forced to watch represents a small victory for Google's relentless monetization strategy. You're not a viewer - you're a product being sold to advertisers, your attention carved up and packaged into marketable segments. The "free" video you want to watch comes with strings attached - strings pulled tightly by one of the world's most powerful tech corporations.

Just press skip.

Oh I see the button now thank you

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

I can't upvote this enough. You have good comic timing.

[-] Aeao@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So do you . The extremely long post about how utubes ads work was aamazing. I read the whole thing. Amazing. Perfect length

So far you’re you’re my favorite person on lemmy.

I mean 4 paragraphs or more on how ads work. That’s totally something I’d do

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

No it isn't. Look, this isn't an argument, it's just contradiction.

[-] TheLastOfHisName@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Look, if I'm going to argue with you, I have to take a contradictory position.

[-] davidagain@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Yes, but it isn't just saying "no it isn't".

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

What's there to argue? It's simply untrue. How much time should I spend arguing something that's factually inaccurate?

But don't take my word for it. Look at their other reply. They admit they were just mistaken. They weren't on that instance. They were on gone wild which is on .world.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You know there's two gonewild communities, yes? One on lemmynsfw with a post from 2 days ago and that I'm a frequent contributor to, and one on .world where the last post was 2 months ago (and that I've never interacted with) that doesn't even show up in the search results without some dedicated scrolling. I'm going to say it's effectively impossible to conflate the two accidentally. It's getting kinda creepy how insistant you are that I must be wrong about doing something completely reasonable.

[-] AngryishHumanoid@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

In her* my bad* defense I know it's been down for days, but I clicked a link to a lemmynsfw post this morning and it did open, then I tested it again a while ago and it didn't, so it is weird.

[-] bdonvr 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

The posts will stay on your instance forever. But as long as the instance is down no new posts will ever come.

Images may or may not show up, depending on if they were externally hosted, got cached, etc.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

(Her) Yeah, I can still access all my posts from there (they don't host on lemmynsfw, I think images are hosted on catbox) which is also just thru federation. But there are new posts on Gonewild from two days ago, which doesn't track with the people saying it's been down for four days - I suspect the outage is intermittent, but unless the admin comes forward with info there's no way for anyone to know right now.

[-] Sharkticon@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago

Gone wild is a .world community.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

This one? I'm pretty sure it's lemmynsfw.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

... Are you one of the lemmynsfw admins and I just don't recognize you?
