Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

We're all really shaken up about this. This shit basically never happens here.
20 deaths from school shootings from 2000-present in all of Canada (mostly Ontario). And now ten in one school.
To put this in to perspective for Americans, École Polytechnique was in 1989, resulted in fifteen deaths, and that was overwhelmingly the only "known" school shooting in Canada. People still talk about it and have memorials and stuff.
This is very much not a regular occurrence in Canada. Fucked up that there are places in the world where this just happens.
Also adding to my growing sense of surprise and shaking myself out of desensitized detachment is this:

The chuds online are already saying it's a trans woman who killed her family and then went to the school. Whether that's true will hardly matter in the end, the story will have riled them before any actual details are ever made public. Fucking heinous way to live your life, turning every awful thing into some attack on strangers.
yeah, my curiosity got the best of me and I peered into a supremely chudly corner of the internet that covers these kinds of events, and they were building collages out of circumstantial evidence across social media platforms, e-mails, IPs, etc. claiming they had identified the shooter as trans
God dammit get strapped folks. Keep it at a friends house if you need to but god fucking dammit we already basically got pogroms going on.
The first two people killed were in a residence which usually means some really fucked up home dynamics as a catalyst for the school shooting (parents usually, but when it happened in Saskatchewan it was cousins)
This is only incidental, but CBC has this line: "The shooting at the small, rural high school today is the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, behind the massacre that left 14 dead at L'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989."
Which is interesting, because, yes, 14 women were killed, but 15 people died. Guess the CBC doesn't count the incel who killed them.

I am so sorry and I hope my other comments didn't come off as dismissive. I am speaking from the perspective of someone that has had multiple friends experience this kind of thing first hand and myself twice. America is fucked and most of the best of us have a whole fucking lot of trauma and baggage.

Yeah it's real fucked. They don't even report heavily on most gun violence in the US. There was a mass shooting in Seattle while I was visiting a friend, another friend of mine got shot by a tweaker over some relation ship bullshit. Another died to suicide via gun within shouting distance of me (The passive voice in this case is because their death was a form of social murder). I get that we must not disarm the workers but the culture and guns in the US is also supremely fucked. I completely understand the libs desperation about gun control given their purposeful miseducation.
Yeah. I have many of the same feelings after Bondi and the attempted bombing at the Perth invasion day rally. It's horrifying. I'm constantly on edge in crowds now.
