I've been thinking about how people like Elon Musk say things like "Empathy is toxic and holds people back." They might be virtue signaling their lack of empathy to each other. Like some kind of messed up version of big dogging. They might be trying to numb themselves to the terrible amount of suffering they have to cause in order to stay rich.
That's the best I can come up with. These people are so evil that it becomes almost alien to me.
A certain slop streamer popularized a good name for it, "vice signaling," though I think in some cases it also serves the more concrete social aim of normalizing extreme antisociality, which is obviously in the interests of capital.
