The party that practically trademarked government shutdowns now want you to believe they aren't responsible and would never want such a thing.
Even though we ordered our representatives not to negotiate and we ordered them not to show up when the Democrats all did. We really wanted to avoid this. Yeah right.
I kinda would have liked to see what would have happened if the Democrats said yes to all their demands.
The only silver lining I see is that the Democrats didn’t. Still, having a mirror in that other dimension would be interesting (if likely depressing)
Yet still, the Democrats totally face planted this. Only people chronically in political news even know why they bothered to not approve the budget. They chose to die on a hill of a nuanced policy stance that doesn't play well in headlines. Gargantuan missed opportunity to make it a populist movement to shut down the govt for something nearly everyone can get behind like minimum wage increases, ending ICE raids, etc.
I'm seeing them take the right stance and say they were doing this to keep healthcare
Which doesn't hit the same with Billy Bob in Arkansas that don't care for what he's been told is socialism, but who earns $7.50 an hour pushing carts at the Piggly Wiggly.
When Billy Bob's health insurance premiums go sky high in 2026, he might actually remember the one talking point about health insurance in October..
And he'll find a way to somehow blame Democrats, as he's been told to do by the GOP, because by then he'll have moved on to 30 other things and won't even remember there was a shut down, let alone why.
Do you seriously think that any average American who can't remember where most US states are on a map will remember calm rational DNC talking points read in full from a piece of paper on CSPAN from months prior? This is literally why the Dems have record low favorability polling despite being up against literal fascism.
I've heard a few democrats responding in more broad news with a very simple message: we are fighting for the healthcare of millions, millions are going to lose their health care or see huge increases. They seem to, at least for this one, be keeping it to a simple single digestable bullet point.
So they got the message out there, and maybe it won't stick, but it lays the foundation for "I told you so" and a chance that the people will be reminded.
Now if they are eyeballs deep in the GOP propaganda and will only accept the stuff filtered through their circlejerk social media communities and fox nows and newsmax, well, there's not much possibly done by the democrats to be heard. However there are enough people that might actually look for deeper answers, because their view will be "The republicans are in control of everything and still my health care got screwed, why?". Sure some might still go for the 'somehow Obama is at fault' or 'the dems are to blame', but some will say "how? we won, we got them out of power and all the news had Trump famously purging those liberals that we were told screwed things behind the scenes, why are things even more expensive my taxes are still as high as ever and I'm losing benefits?"
Trump is some emotional Schrödinger's cat, where he is simultaneously the strongest most verile muscle man ever birthed on this planet, and the victim of every sniveling wimp bureaucrat ever.
Meaning that Democratic rebuttals that don't short circuit that binary situation, like Gavin Newsome's recent twitter brilliance, are the way it works. Only a Strongman shuts down a Strongman.
Whining about healthcare is for elitists with jobs.
The piggly wiggly guy is going to be unaffected by a government shutdown. The people that will be affected are government employees who are at this point mainly trump people.
Maybe recheck what you know about federal employees. At most it's 35% veterans, and they're not some monolithic group.
Ok but you were talking about the piggly wiggly guy. Do you want to elaborate on that or do you realize how silly that statement is?
I'm sure there's a lot of great people in the public sector but the trump admin would replace them all with trump people if they could. Usually the public sector workers get backpay after these anyway. In the NIH you have people being overridden by trump loyalists. I'm sure its similar everywhere. Better to pay people to do nothing than to follow trump's insane decrees
The Schedule F EO is about replacing federal workers with loyalist dumbasses all the way down to the lower levels, and hasn't been fully leveraged yet. Every agency gets political appointees in the upper management areas, but it usually doesn't go beyond a couple dozen or few dozen people running an Agency of hundreds of staff. That's how it has worked for about a century, and the Civil Service Act only professionalized the middle management and lower specialist levels of federal employees.
Mr. Wiggly represents people who are unaffected and don't care, which polls show is the majority of Americans.
