The idea of doing any sort of general preamble for China is a little absurd given how ubiquitous they are in economics and politics, so I'm just going to hop right in to a recent news item of interest: China is working on the construction of an enormous new hydropower project in Tibet (@[email protected] had brought this up just before the last news mega ended).
This project (consisting of, I believe, five dams) will be overall three times larger than the Three Gorges Dam, will cost $167 billion, and will supply 70 GW (by itself more power than several significant countries generate). There are, of course, meaningful concerns regarding concerning environmental damage, but helping to avert catastrophic climate change seems worth it. The news coming out of the clean energy sector of China has getting only more encouraging over the last few years, even as the fully neoliberalized Europe and America descend into climate skepticism and refuse to adequately fund projects that could avert the worst of climate change.
Geopolitically, given recent India-China tensions (for example, sending Pakistan the equipment to shoot down Indian jets, as well as run-of-the-mill border tensions) one expects India to not receive the news very well, as the river upon which the dam is being constructed proceeds to flow into Arunachal Pradesh. But from what I understand of the Indian hydrological situation (which is, admittedly, not much), I don't think enough of the water in India comes from the river for China to hypothetically cause any kind of water shortages in India - the monsoons seem to supply plenty of freshwater all by themselves. Nonetheless, as with all Chinese news, wild fearmongering abounds.

Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

No federal funding means that if we just suddenly got dropped but still had to respect the debt we owe to Wall Street, we'd have even more vicious austerity that would destroy the education system and welfare. I don't think this would be good at all without a concrete plan for debt cancellation and having our own currency.
True but having formal independence means that an anti-imperialist and anti-neoliberal campaign can be waged as a national struggle and not add a liberation campaign on top, which could turn extra violent in other circumstances.
It also means having the sovereignty to start creating ties with other powers in the world, and getting closer to oppressed nations like Cuba or Venezuela.
You're probably right, but I fear that if "independence" was forced through like Republicans probably have it planned out, it would be in the form of turning us into a pre-revolutionary Cuba situation for American cryptobros to come settle here for even more lax tax laws, with most of the working-age population rapidly fleeing the economic collapse brought on by the lack of federal funding. Who's gonna fight the national liberation struggle when it's much, much easier to leave for the US?
The people, of course. Look at anti-gentrification protests in México and the pink tide in Latinoamérica.
Anything is better than being a colony. Political independence is the first step. Simón Bolivar/Iturbide/L'ouverture/San Martin/O'Higgins/Martí brought the first independence, the second and true independence will be fought in the streets against the imperialists and their compradors all around Nuestra América.
It is easier for a Cuban or Venezuelan to emigrate to the US or another country. But the people that stay are those that want to build a new and sovereign nation, free from the shackles of the empire. And even then people are noticing that emigrating to the US is a bad idea, you are bound to get insulted and deported to El Salvador. People in Latinoamérica are noticing that staying put and building a better country at home is a better idea to leaving. Venezuelans are slowly but accelerating their return to the motherland.
