Because he was on the boat to begin with. I am also wondering why he wasn't there.
He helped launch the boat, though he was never planning on going. Turns out it got misreported and amplified.
I had to look it up when they got captured because I only saw the incorrect reporting, not any corrections, and assumed the same thing.
He posted a picture of the 12 volunteers and their names, his not included
