when Stalin sent tanks in to crush the Hungarian communist party because they wanted independence from the Soviet Union.

I can think of at least two things wrong with this sentence.

Out of interest, what year did this happen?

The term was revived when China literally crushed a student protest using tanks.

Just ignore the 30 year delay...
