Falun Gong/dafa had a very large presence at my local may days parade. I realize i don't have much concrete knowledge on the subject. Any reading recommendations? (hexbear.net)

Talking with my wife after all i could really come up with was them being compradors and i felt pretty silly taking out of my ass

Quite possibly. Syncretic religions/movements aren't bad but this one got way into woo territory, with a persecution complex from the very start. I found the Zhuan Falun years before I became a communist, and had very mixed feelings about Falun Dafa. It makes a lot of sense that it is a "movement of the expats".
