Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

Some of the most annoying people on reddit-logo made me realize why I dislike freiren so much now. With the new devil may cry netflix show out a lot of comparison is being made between the two shows with how the demons are protrayed. Freiren fans try not to be white supremacists challenge impossible catgirl-hiss holy shit I always had a lingering feeling why I didn't like the show but pushed passed it

spoilerend of dmc more or less makes a great comparison to the war in Iraq to the invasion of the demon world and the amount of chuds/frieren fans that go see this is how you do it is right on pissing me off

The same tired defense for frieren I see is "they aren't humans but animals that learned to mimic us to prey on us" is absolutely making me want to scream. Like that hasn't been used on us by white people for ages to justify all the violence against us.Even if you wanna say this a different show fine different logic it's apparent how anime fans just keep pushing for this to any group not fully "human" in their eyes. You even get people saying "sparda was one of the good ones" holy shit I'm angry

Frieren's author(s) I think got too far into the meta. They were trying to subvert tropes in other series where demons can be good/be redeemed by returning to classic "Our demons are just evil, actually."

No matter what your intentions, though, as soon as you make a "race" of ontologically evil, sentient beings, it will devolve into racist stereotypes. Tolkien fell into the same trap. I think the worst was Gary Gygax. He had colonialist, white supremacist, genocidal beliefs and he incorporated those beliefs into a game that became synonymous with fantasy. After decades, these tropes have spread, been subverted/remixed/parodied/etc. to the point people no longer recognize where these tropes originated. Unless you're among the groups targeted by these tropes. Then it's abundantly clear where these ideas came from.

Russians have been experiencing this with people calling them "orcs." Jews are constantly subjected to the blood libel, then people go further by claiming Jews are goblins/faeries/small evil kidnappers/etc. Black and brown people are depicted as being humans mixed with animals or monsters, which is used to dehumanize us as feral, pagan savages. Israelis straight-up call Palestinians devils, so we know the impact fantasy tropes have on supporting genocide.

Personally, I don't understand why it's so difficult for people to admit there's problematic content in the media they consume. Maybe it's conditioning from being a leftist? We're used to everything having reactionary, liberal bullshit, so it's easier for us. Chuds, on the other hand, don't want to expend the mental energy thinking about what they enjoy. They just want to consume.

Well said. Its everywhere, hell look at the whole no kill rule in comics... That suddenly doesn't count when it comes to sentient aliens for some reason thonk then they ofcourse apply it again to aliens that look human but the others regardless of sentience? Nah fuck em.

Then the attack on titan for example where good lord..... There were some jewish folks who have a problem with it and I can see why.

The various media influenced by the guy you mentioned gygax who assign negative traits to certain races and we're just meant to accept it as how it is just move on. But in real life I've seen way to many people use the same critical thinking on real life groups and traits.

Great way to put it, I'm very aware of Gyagx and his rhetoric of killing 'evil' races when they're babies. It still happens among leftists I feel because they have just taken the story on face value and also don't wanna look deeper. As a show I quite like frieren up until that point, the animation and score is amazing but then it just hits a wall for me there. I finished the anime and felt eh about it. Honestly wasn't long since I finished dungeon meshi and made me appreciate it much more afterwards with how demons are portrayed there.

Also they forget frieren is diffent compared to most anime/manga in that in general demons arent fully evil beings or in some cases misunderstood or even good, its in the west where in general demons are seen as fully evil beings (from christianity).

its a bunch of fascists watching their first anime and then claiming all anime its like it

Fr I think on some extend a lot of these chuds know but are fine doing dog whistles. A somewhat good subreddit I follow just is full with an automod screaming at people "freiren demons are animals don't look into it more stop ruining my fun" message. It's why I'm starting to despise freiren fans more and more, even got glossed over by some friends once before I watched the show on this topic. Part of me is curious now about where the manga goes tbh I know most anime fans don't watch the show or read the manga as is so maybe there's more to it.

Is Whitey lurking our thread looking for bait so they can stir up struggle sessions?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Lol no, its just the constant frieren demon discourse that chuds have keep going for like a year now

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hope not but yes-honey-left if this thread does have eyes I'll say this, remember your comrades are sensitive to dog whistles and in this context freiren being pushed over DMC is a glaring one in terms of demons. Arguing past it of how freiren is a subversion of demon meta ignores the current and historical context how media is dominated by white perspectives and the othering of different races (I'm aware freiren is made by Japanese authors but it borrows deeply from Tolkien and Gygax ( (also you made the point better just refreshing) ) so when I see comrades not getting it it is disheartening. A lot of people loudly arguing demons in frieren aren't people remind me too much of liberals arguing how clearly that was a Roman salute or he was giving his heart to the audience. Also beanis hope you don't mind me writing past you like this, don't quite feel like going into that thread and debating catgirl-sorry

don't quite feel like going into that thread and debating

Me neither lol. Just thought it was odd that thread showed up right after it was brought up here (probably just a coincidence since DMC just came out and is popular).

Hoping it just a delayed thing of what I saw 🤞
