Fumiko Kaneko sits on her knees wearing a striped kimono with her hands clasped in front of her, staring intently ahead. c. 1925, author unknown [Wikipedia]
Fumiko Kaneko, born on this day in 1903, was a Japanese anarchist, nihilist, and opponent to Japanese imperialism in Korea. Fumiko is perhaps best remembered for her "The Prison Memoirs Of A Japanese Woman", written while imprisoned after being convicted of high treason against the Japanese government.
Together, Fumiko and her Korean partner Pak Yol published two magazines which highlighted the problems Koreans faced under Japanese imperialism and showed influences of their radical politics. Sometime between 1922 and 1923, they also established a group called "F"utei-sha (Society of Malcontents)", which Fumiko identified as a group for direct action against the government.
These activities soon brought Pak and Fumiko under government scrutiny. In September 1923, the Japanese government therefore made a number of arrests, mostly Koreans, on limited evidence, and among those arrested were Pak and Fumiko.
After lengthy judicial proceedings, Fumiko and Pak were convicted of high treason for attempting to obtain bombs with the intention of killing the emperor or his son. They were both sentenced to life in prison, however Fumiko allegedly committed suicide in her cell in 1926.
Here is a short excerpt from one of Fumiko's interrogations while imprisoned (text by Max Res from theanarchistlibrary.org):
Q: Your class?
A: A divine commoner.
Q: How are you employed?
A: My job is tearing down everything that currently exists.

Older games in 4K look so much better than modern games in 4K and a bunch of modern rendering, upscaling, and AA techniques. Like turn down the fidelity a tad and games will just look better. I know technically subsurface scattering generates more realistic skin tones and facial animations, but stylizing faces instead looks better with a lot fewer compute cycles. Like I think we’re just making too many trade offs to add more “detail” that we can’t even see. I don’t even mean can’t see without zooming in, I mean the detail gets lost because the native resolution has to drop so all we see from the fancy stuff they add in is upscale artifacts.
Sorry, I just saw a DLSS transformer model comparison then I played GTAIV in 4K, and GTAIV looks fine, we simply don’t need cyberpunk or Alan wake 2 level of fidelity, especially when that means we run the game at 720p and hope the upscale doesn’t produce a fever dream.
All of the fancy graphics increasingly come at the cost of everything looking like a fizzly mess during movement. Not an acceptable trade IMO.
Agreed.
2000s game devs: it’s fine that this asset doesn’t look convincing as a still, it looks good in motion ultimately making the feel of the world right
2020s gamedevs: it’s fine everything looks wrong in motion because because if you stop and stare for 2 seconds the AI algorithm will make it look good momentarily before the illusion breaks because by its nature video game reality is only fleeting and best designed around assuming the player is moving through the world.
I'm playing a new game, Abiotic Factor, recently. It is built on UE5, but eschews most of the realism of graphics to replicate a older GoldSrc/Half life-1 aesthetic. It does a really great job of it, and adds in UE5 Lumen for lighting. Its a pretty nice combination
Hell yeah, even lower fidelity than I had in mind and it still works better. The dividing line in my mind is “does this game look like it’s supposed to look like or not” and the game you mentioned, GTAIV, Wind Waker look like what they’re supposed to look like, a lot of modern games don’t. It gets hidden behind specific complaints about the upscaler artifacts, blurriness or ghosting, but I think the truth there is those games just somehow don’t look like they’re supposed to look.
Half-Life 2 still looks great, IMO.
I will always prefer a stylized, hand-pixelled character texture to visual realism slop
