Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Why is the title different?
We like to have fun here.
What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.
What are the basic rules of the community?
-
Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.
-
This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.
-
No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.
-
Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.
FAQ
I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be "white" but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you've experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.
-
Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are "white" but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.

I don't post in this mega often, but I know from lurking around that you're the coolest people here 😎 The crackers are at it again, and I share a lot of the pessimism I see in this thread rn, but I also wanna say that having been here with this community since its inception, I've seen many, many, many struggle sessions (and instigated a few of them myself... ) and this community genuinely has improved and grown incrementally each time in a positive direction. Obviously it sucks that we have to have these learning moments in the first place, and the pace at each change occurs is slower than any of us hope, but I have seen this community continually move in the right direction in a way I haven't seen any other online community this large do. Maybe it's cope, but just thought I'd inject some optimism into here... Idk.
the problem is, its not just hexbear. on twitter you have "leftist" accounts joining hand to hand with right wing racists on attacking "identity politics". the way i like to think of it is that the white western left is similar to the israeli left. should i spend my emotional energy with the matters and discourses of the "israeli left"? id rather not.
I swear, these people's heads would break, if I told them ethnophobia, Islamophobia, western individualism, and the like are "identity politics"
Then again, someone's opposition to "identity politics" is more or less a way to virtue-signal cultural reactionary behavior
again people just don’t get there ass beat enough nowadays. racism would be much less prevalent if we made it socially acceptable to pop someone in the mouth for saying a slur
See, people are still getting beat, just the wrong ones... Im pretty young and I regularly was beaten and called slurs growing up, but I also was in an actual klan town in Appalachia so idk if that's representative of the US as a whole
yeah like you said there’s so much violence still being perpetrated but like always, they’re always punching down. I grew up in a more “liberal area” of the west coast so thankfully other than slurs and systemic issues the only violence i ever faced was state sponsored from cops, but i know even over here in the eastern parts of the coast states there’s a huge issue of more and more neo nazis flocking to and around places like idaho. The US is and will always be a settler colonialist project, i just wish i could engage with the racists in the uhhh… free market place of ideas.
There's a town about 30 minutes over from where I live where the klan is still active and even though it's not a sundown town anymore....it's still a sundown town. I don't even stop there in daylight hours and drive straight through. My sister used to live in the town even further, so she had to drive through there constantly (though she's white). I remember her telling me "If we have to stop for whatever reason, do not get out of the car."
A lot of people trapped there in poverty, too. I'll run into people from there who are white that mention trying to get out because they don't want to be around klansmen. And of course, the cops in that town all have white sheets in their closet.
