Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Why is the title different?
We like to have fun here.
What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.
What are the basic rules of the community?
-
Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.
-
This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.
-
Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.
-
No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.
-
Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.
FAQ
I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?
-
This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be "white" but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you've experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.
-
Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are "white" but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.

fuuuuuck, now I gotta make some gorditas. It's been too long since I've had some quality
cw typical cracker food racism
This has also awakened a memory from middle school when the Spanish class teacher asked the kids what their favorite latam foods were. I had close family friends from Mexico who would make disgustingly good gorditas. Had a lovely little family restaurant that sadly shut down a little later :( They were my favorite food period as a kid, and of course when it comes time for me to answer what my favorite food is, I answer "gorditas" and this midwestern cracker teacher scoffs, rolls her eyes, and says "Taco Bell doesn't count, I mean real dishes". Actually got laughed at in class lmao, topic moved on with socially inept autistic me trying to explain that no, it's a "real food".My sympathies at getting laughed at like that I'm also autistic so I can relate to stuff like that, over all I avoided spanish classes in high school more than anything because I knew I would have to unlearn my spanish for "proper" anglo taught spanish the kind that is so weird to hear.
Absolutely would avoid it if I could've, sadly it was required class. The school system thought it necessary to have a white lady who cannot speak spanish lecture and grade children, many of whom were native speakers, on their spanish
I was lucky enough that I picked french, I've not used it but I at least remember how to kinda read it. Honestly I keep thinking of Peggy Hill tbh for your teacher
JFC they couldn't even find someone randomly off the street? Learning a second language is hard enough as-is. It's even harder if you basically have to teach yourself from a worksheet.
My high school Spanish teacher was also garbage. My middle school teacher was great, but then got fired for sexual misconduct towards students. I just wanted to learn some Español ._.
I wish I had recipes from back then, there was a falling out years ago and haven't heard of em since sadly. I don't remember them being especially complex variations on anything, just done well.
