Love it when the fix for a PC issue is "go to the BIOS", when the issue is the PC won't even load to the point that BIOS is an option. Partner's 10 year old PC is basically dead (thinks it needs to load from a USB, when it doesn't and never has), so mine is now The Family Computer.

Which is fine for now, I'm addicted to Slice'n'Dice on my phone anyway lol

You can usually find a good deal on Ozbargin for some second hand business gear. My laptop cost me 300 bucks and honestly its a gem of a machine to use. Something like thiswould be a huge upgrade over a 10 year old machine.

Even first-hand! My current laptop is a beast that I guess got rejected from a big tech company (still had their name on the shipping label underneath). Brand new and more than 50% off RRP. Only downside is it's polycarbonate and I'm use to fancy metal but I had to snap it up.

You could roll with that and load it from a Linux usb? That might at least let you grab any files off it

Someone here probably knows the process better

I always had issues booting off of an Ubuntu USB with persistent storage. The USBs kept getting so hot they died. At least I assume they died, within a couple of weeks I'd start encountering random errors nobody else ever seems to have had that nobody could help fix. But I have only tried Ubuntu and it works for long enough I've been able to do whatever I need to do

I installed a new HD about 18 months ago, and am using the old one as storage. On the weekend, the boot sequence changed somehow from my new SDD to my old one and my PC wouldn't boot. I changed the boot sequence in BIOS to start with the new HD, and still nothing. I gave up and was ready to boot from a windows disk. Problem was, I only have two power cables, and both were being used by the hard drives. So I unplugged the old one to plug into the CD drive.

Reboot and the PC booted using thew HD. I have no idea why the boot protocol changed and why it wouldn't let me prioritise the new HD.

Ain't touching it again.

Ugh I'm having computer issues too. Although it's more GPU drama for me
